Responsibilities
Managing customer relationships is the account manager’s most key role, in the technology company
Customer relationships operate at many different levels
Account managers aim to build relationships with the senior business and financial executives who influence purchasing decisions in customer companies
They focus on maintaining relationships with technical decision makers such as the chief information officer, information technology director and information technology manager
They act as customer advocates to ensure that all departments understand customers’ requirements and respond with the right quality of service
Working with product development teams, Account Managers ensure that the product portfolio reflects changing customer needs.
Account managers coordinate the work of technical support teams to provide customers with the different services they need throughout their ownership of the products, including solution design, installation, training, user support and maintenance
Account managers develop plans to maximize business opportunities with each customer
The plans help technology companies forecast demand accurately and integrate sales and marketing campaigns with individual account development plans
The sales cycle for technology products is long and complex, involving different decision makers at each stage. Account managers identify the information and resource requirements for the key stages of initial inquiry, meeting a customer’s specification, preparing proposals, customer evaluation and supplier selection. They set up meetings with decision makers, and arrange presentations and documentation to ensure that the company achieves the position of preferred supplier
Account managers build trust and strengthen relationships by keeping customers informed on the way emerging technologies can help their business. They prepare briefings on the business, technical and financial benefits of technology and collaborate with customers to develop customized solutions. Collaboration helps to build partnership with customers and ensures elevated levels of customer retention
