Overview:
The Carey School, a Pre-K to 5 independent school in San Mateo, California, is seeking Lead Counselors to support our summer program, Camp Carey. It is the Lead Counselor’s responsibility to design and implement a dynamic camp program for their camp group, ensuring an engaging and enriching experience for all participants. You will lead by example, demonstrating enthusiasm, inclusivity, flexibility, and a commitment to making every camper feel joyful and confident.
Responsibilities:
The Lead Counselor is accountable to the Auxiliary Programs Director and assumes all responsibilities as assigned.
- Develop and execute diverse, age-appropriate activities aligned with weekly themes
- Lead group activities and supervise campers, with support from the Assistant Counselor
- Cultivate a positive and inclusive environment by fostering respect, belonging, and cooperation
- Guide and assist Assistant Counselors in fulfilling their responsibilities
- Collaborate with Assistant Counselors, CIT Coordinator, and camp leadership for smooth operations
- Ensure camper safety and well-being by following all camp protocols and procedures
- Exemplify positive behavior and enthusiasm as a role model for campers and staff
- Monitor camper behavior, intervening when necessary to address conflicts and promote appropriate behavior
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of camp spaces and materials
- Mentor and support CITs, keeping the CIT Coordinator updated on their progress
- Communicate effectively with camp leadership, fellow staff members, and parents/guardians as needed
Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with youth in a camp, school, or recreational setting preferred
- Experience designing and implementing camp activities and curriculum preferred
- Strong leadership abilities with a passion for mentoring and guiding young individuals
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work and connect with diverse groups of people
- Patience, flexibility, and resilience to adapt to the dynamic nature of a camp environment
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude and high energy level throughout the camp day

- Position Type: Seasonal, Full-Time
- Pay Rate: $25-30 per hour
