What are the responsibilities and job description for the Behavior Assistant-School position at The Center for Autism Education?

GENERAL SUMMARY:Under general supervision, the Behavioral Assistant:

  • prepares classrooms at the beginning of the day, including picture schedules, data sheets, and other visual supports as needed
  • assists classroom supervisors and case managers in general preparation for the school day
  • implements 1:1 instruction of curriculum given by classroom supervisors and/or case manager, as well as, executes behavior plans as directed by Certified Special Education Teachers and/or Behavioral Analyst
  • provides 1:1 supervision of assigned student at all times
  • interacts with students appropriately and initiates leisure activities during students’ break times using activity binders and other leisure/free time activities provided
  • attends therapies with the student in his/her care, observing techniques used with the student to elicit desired responses
  • uses concepts and techniques taught by the therapists, generalizing the skills with the children during classroom routines
  • records and dates (day, month, and year) all data including behavior data, data for instructional material, and grading of materials
  • performs tasks as directed by the Education and Executive Directors as necessary
  • completes training as outlined in The Center for Autism Education policy book including Safe Crisis Management
  • effectively uses Safe Crisis Management (SCM) techniques taught to intervene with a student experiencing crisis, and then notifies Supervisor of the event
  • completes an event report within 24 hours objectively detailing the crisis
  • Effectively able to stoop, bend, lift up to 20 pounds, kneel, sit on the floor, walk a distance of up to one mile at a time, and run at a brisk pace in order to support a student who elopes.

Efficiency:The employee does a good job managing time and materials. He/She makes certain that the work performed is beneficial to both inside and outside the school. The employee completes work on time and to the economic benefit of the school. Every effort will be made to recycle or reuse materials as purchased by or given to The Center for Autism Education.

Quality:The employee completes work neatly every day, with minimal mistakes. The employee seeks out ways to improve the quality of services delivered. He/She does this by doing things to increase satisfaction and outcomes for the students served. In addition, continuing education will be obtained on a regular basis to maintain certification to remain current within the field of autism practices and behavior strategies, to ensure quality of work.

Employee Partnership:The employee is expected to be a good team member. He/She displays respect, care, and safety toward parents, coworkers, supervisors, and visitors. He/She helps co-workers to reach students’ goals by being resourceful, dependable and flexible. He/She can also lead others when necessary.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES REQUIRED:

The employee should demonstrate the philosophy and values of The Center for Autism Education, adhering strictly to the Principles in Applied Behavior Analysis and Code of Ethics, while giving leadership and innovation in the education field. A Behavioral Assistant should be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma and 60 college credit hours. In addition, the employee will participate in required staff development as directed.

Pediatric and adolescent students, parents, and families of The Center for Autism Education will be the population served by this position. Interpersonal skills will require oral and written communication skills to communicate with families. Weekly data collection will be the responsibility of the Behavioral Assistant.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work will be performed inside The Center for Autism Education, in a temperature controlled environment. Work may also be performed in the form of community outings with the students. The knowledge and use of universal precautions is expected as this position may be exposed to air-borne particles or bodily fluids while working with the students.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports directly to Special Education Program Coordinator/Special Education Teacher for daily classroom functioning, and is supervised on a more general level by the Special Education Program Coordinator/Teacher.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $19.00 - $21.20 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 32.50 per week
