What are the responsibilities and job description for the Family Peer Advocate position at The Child Center Of NY, Inc.?
Summary
The Family Peer Advocate is responsible for serving as a liaison for parents and providing family support, advocacy, and connecting family to supportive services. The Parent Advocate/Case Aide position will also need to make home/school visits. Provide support when another staff is on vacation/leave. This individual will be a parent or caregiver who is/has raised a child with SED and is personally familiar with the associated challenges and available community resources.
Essential Functions:
- Work with clients who need assistance in areas such as housing, public assistance, Medicaid, schools, and the juvenile justice system.
- Represents the agency at various councils, committees, and with other agencies, according to program needs.
- Provide translation services, when needed and possible.
- Organize and lead parent self-help and advocacy groups and coordinate efforts with other service providers and networks.
- Provides childcare/supervision while parents are involved in program services.
- Conduct home/school visits.
- Provide support when another staff is on vacation or on leave.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalency.
- 1 year of experience working with children and families.
- Some experience either paid or as a volunteer in helping children and parents.
- Ability to work in diverse social, cultural, and economic groups.
- Good communication and listening skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to plan and carry out assignments.
Ability to prioritize, adhere to timelines, and multi-task.
