JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision of the Shop Superintendent, the Senior Mechanic ensures the City’s vehicles and equipment are maintained and in good working condition. Repairs and performs maintenance on mechanical and automotive equipment.


SUPERVISION

 

RECEIVES direct supervision from the Shop Superintendent

EXERCISES no supervision.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:



Diagnose Mechanical Issues

  • Inspect, diagnose and locate complex mechanical difficulties in City automobiles, trucks and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Utilize electronic diagnostic platforms.


Repair Mechanical Problems

  • Troubleshoot to determine extent of necessary repairs.
  • Replace and repair faulty or damaged parts.
  • Determine when repairs are beyond the shop capabilities.

 

Repair Heavy Equipment

  • Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials and clutches on heavy and diesel equipment.

 

Engine Maintenance

  • Tune up engines as needed.
  • Replace ignition parts.
  • Clean and adjust carburetors.

 

Repair and Replace Faulty Parts

  • Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and related parts and equipment.
  • Repair and replace such components as generators, distributors, relays, lights and switches.

 

Welding

  • Weld broken parts and equipment. Fabricate and weld new parts from stock metal. Modify stock equipment for more strength.
  • Paint vehicles and equipment.

 

Shop Maintenance

  • Oversee less experienced mechanics in the performance of major mechanical repairs as assigned.
  • Plan and assign work for shop mechanics and helpers.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness by keeping tools, equipment, and work area clean and orderly.
  • Maintain safety at all times.
  • Repair shop equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain all work time and material records.

 

Other Duties

  • May be required to assist in the setup, teardown, and cleanup for special events and meetings.
  • May occasionally be required to work on-call, evenings or weekends.
  • Assist in other departmental operations when needed.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:

A High School diploma or equivalent is required. Four years’ experience in general vehicle or equipment maintenance and repair, including one year of experience in a specialized area; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training and/or education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  



Knowledge of:

  • Tools, equipment and procedures used in the overhaul, repair and adjustment of gas and diesel-powered equipment.
  • Fleet operations and services.
  • Various specialized types of vehicles diagnostic testing and analysis equipment and tools used in vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Preventive maintenance techniques.
  • Operation and care of internal combustion engines.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Policies and procedures of the City as they relate to equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Operating and repair characteristics of a full range of City-owned equipment.



Skills and Abilities:

  • Perform major mechanical work on equipment and vehicles.
  • Perform difficult manual labor including lifting heavy weights, stooping, bending and twisting.
  • Learn the operating and repair characteristics of a full range of City-owned equipment.
  • Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.
  • Work productively in the absence of supervision.
  • Accurately determine mechanical repair needs.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Perform a full range of mechanical work including the trouble­shooting of equipment for both major and minor repairs.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Reading and comprehending technical manuals.
  • Comprehending and following oral and written instructions.
  • Be punctual and regular in attendance.



LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

(All licenses and certifications noted below apply to all employees hired after 09/27/17)

  • Automotive Service Excellence Certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Class B CDL driver’s license, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months from the date of hire or date moved to the position.
  • May be required to obtain additional certification or licensure specific to area of assignment after date of employment at the City’s expense.

 


PHYSICAL DEMANDS / ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed in a fleet maintenance shop environment.
  • May require standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, reaching, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls.
  • May be subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, loud noises, hazardous chemicals, and fumes,
  • Must be able to work in stressful situations.
