Workdays & Hours: Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm; Some evening/weekend work required. Flexible work schedule currently allows for four days / week at 10 hours per day if desired with one day per week to work remotely from home after probationary period ends.

A Fire Plans Examiner job is available with the City of Fort Worth Fire Department, Bureau of Fire Prevention / Fire Marshal's Office. This position performs a variety of technical duties in reviewing, approving, and processing building permit submittals for Fire Code review. This includes evaluating Fire Code compliance relative to fire lanes, fire hydrants, and fire protection requirements, such as fire sprinklers, standpipes, fire alarm, hazardous materials, high-rise criteria, etc., as well as verification of gas well setbacks, as adopted by the City of Ft Worth. In addition, the position reviews plans, calculations, specifications, and product data for compliance with adopted Fire Code, Building Code, referenced standards, and applicable laws and evaluates site plans for conformance with the Fire Code amendments as well.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree
  • Two (2) years of city building inspection, plans examination, construction field, landscape architecture, forestry experience or related field.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a certificate from a national model code organization showing satisfactory competence in code knowledge in assigned examination area of the disciplines covered by this classification, i.e., fire protection.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in Fire Code plans examination of building permits.
  • Experience with Accela permitting system.
  • Certified Fire Plans Examiner (TCFP), CFPS (NFPA), CFPE (NFPA), ICC plans exam certification, of Certified Fire Inspector/Plans Examiner (TCFP) highly desirable.

The Plans Examiner job responsibilities include:

  • Reviews building permit plans and specifications to ensure compliance with the adopted Fire Code and referenced standards, including gas well setback compliance, and other supporting documentation.
  • Interprets and applies relevant regulations, laws, ordinances, and departmental guidelines during plan reviews to ensure code compliance.
  • Provides technical assistance and guidance on drawings, permit applications, calculations, and code requirements to fire protection contractors, building professionals, and the general public.
  • Collaborates with applicants and professionals—including contractors, engineers, and architects—to resolve discrepancies and recommend compliant solutions.
  • Assists Fire Inspectors at on-site inspections as needed to verify project compliance with approved plans and City regulations.
  • Communicates required plan revisions and follow-up actions through correspondence with applicants, owners, and other responsible parties.
  • Maintains accurate records by entering, updating, and retrieving data in the City's permitting system to track application status and issue permits.

Physical Demands

Light Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly having to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for the Sedentary Work category and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated Light Work.
