Zoo Educator

POSITION SUMMARY

Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo has a proud history of 100 years as Connecticut’s only Zoo and is committed to the preservation of endangered animals.

The Educator is responsible for performing all technical work required to meet the goals of the Zoo’s AZA accreditation. This includes; research, design, creation, presentation and evaluation of all on and off-site programming. The Educator is also responsible for maintaining the health of the living collection in accordance with USDA, AZA and institutional protocols. Responsibilities also include maintaining on-line learning curricula and co-administration of the system.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in related field such as education, zoology or animal science
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving history

Experience:

• A minimum of 5-years related experience.

Knowledge/Skills:

• Basic knowledge of characteristics, diets, habits and well-being of a variety of wild and domestic species and breeds.
• Proficient PC skills using MS Office and other various computer systems, including iPads, tablets and other smart devices.
• Must be results oriented professional with excellent verbal/written communication skills using diplomacy and discretion as well as the ability to communicate effectively with the public, superiors, co-workers and supervision of volunteers.
• Ability to multi-task, work independently and/or within a team, pays attention to detail and meet deadlines.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and climb or balance and must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to zoo animals and habitats. The ability to share workspace, travel by car, dress in proper attire, participate in evening and weekend events and meet deadlines are all requirements of this position. Employee may be exposed to inclement weather.

Must be available to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends and holidays. The Zoo is open daily from 9:00am to 4:00pm.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $30,000.00 - $35,000.00 per year
