Description
Provides one-on-one support and education, but can also help co-facilitate group education, family education, outreach and support sessions. Provides a good forum for individuals to share their experiences about HIV and treatment, reducing feelings of isolation. Tips on reducing adverse effects and improving medication adherence can also be shared in such settings. This position requires effective written and verbal communication skills as well as life experience with HIV disease, mental illness or mental health services which professional training cannot replicate. The Peer Specialist serves as an advocate for consumers within the Consortium and the community.
