Job Description
Cottonwood School of Civics and Science in Portland, OR, is seeking dedicated and adaptable On-Call Substitute Teachers to join our team. The ideal candidate will be committed to providing quality education in a nurturing and engaging environment when the regular classroom teacher is unavailable. This is an on-call, as-needed position, requiring flexibility, reliability, and a passion for supporting students in grades K-8
Key Responsibilities:
- Instructional Support: Implement lesson plans as directed by the regular classroom teacher, ensuring that students are engaged and that educational goals are met.
- Classroom Management: Maintain a positive and productive classroom environment, addressing any behavioral issues according to school policies, and fostering a respectful atmosphere for all students.
- Student Engagement: Facilitate learning activities, discussions, and group projects, encouraging critical thinking and collaboration in subjects related to civics, science, and other core areas of study.
- Record Keeping: Take attendance, monitor student progress, and submit any required reports to the appropriate personnel at the end of the day.
- Collaboration: Communicate with the school administration and staff as needed, ensuring smooth transitions and continuity in instruction.
- Adaptability: Quickly adjust to different classroom settings, student needs, and teaching methods, maintaining a high standard of educational support.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field is preferred. A valid Oregon teaching license or substitute teaching permit is required for some positions
- Experience: Previous experience in a classroom or teaching setting is desirable, but not required. Experience working with students in a K-12 environment is a plus.
- Skills & Attributes:
- Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with students of various ages and learning styles.
- Classroom management skills and the ability to remain calm and effective in challenging situations.
- Flexibility and reliability in responding to on-call requests.
- A passion for civics, science, and education, with a commitment to the school's mission and values.
- Enjoying the outdoors and potentially working with students on Field Work
Work Environment:
- This is an on-call position with hours dependent on the school’s needs, typically during weekdays, Monday through Friday.
- You may be assigned to substitute for any grade level or subject, depending on the school’s daily needs.
- The position requires working in a collaborative school environment where every staff member is committed to fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere for both students and faculty.
- Our school is a placed based education school and spends alot of time outdoors and working in the community. Substitutes may be required to attend field work or class outside of the building depending on the schedule.
