The Doctors Company Patient Safety team has an opportunity for a Vice President, Patient Safety. This is a hybrid or telecommuter opportunity depending on the final candidate’s location from the company's office. The final candidate must reside within one of the company's Region I states, preferably California, Oregon, Arizona or Nevada.
Position Mission:
The VP, Patient Safety is responsible for leading and advancing the organization’s patient safety and risk management initiatives through strategic business development, exceptional member service, and operational excellence.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field (e.g., Nursing, Public Health, Healthcare Administration or related discipline) or business administration required; advanced degree preferred (e.g., MSN, MHA, MPH, MBA, JD)
- RN license preferred
- Must possess a valid state driver’s license and be able to travel locally and regionally as required
- 10 years of progressive experience in healthcare and/or the medical professional liability insurance industry, with substantial expertise in at least one of the following domains: risk management, patient safety, or quality/performance improvement
- Demonstrates outstanding written and verbal communication abilities, with a proven capacity to distil complex data or medical information and convey it clearly to diverse audiences.
Responsibilities:
Business Development and Relationship Development
- Identifies and promotes consulting and educational services with Regional Direct Sales, Independent Agents, medical societies and specialty societies
- Monitors new business pipeline for opportunities requiring Patient Safety support and coordinates participation
- Oversees analysis of submissions and presentations to new business opportunities
- Coordinates Patient Safety support of production and retention activities lead by Direct Sales and Independent Agents
Member Service
- Ensures coverage for responding to members' questions (24/7 availability and e-mail access)
- Oversees, directs and assists members with available resources including (tool kits, CME, data analytics, articles, self-assessment tools, etc.)
- Ensures effective delivery of solution focused risk management and patient safety consultation to members in a cost effective manner
- Leads the development and implementation of account service plans in accordance with department standards
- Oversees PS participation in Operational UW Reviews and Claims Roundtables
Plan Development and Implementation
- Works with ROO and HQ Patient Safety in Regional and National Patient Safety planning and implementation
- Develops regional implementation plans according to territories and account mix/demographics
- Works with ROO & HQ Patient Safety to develop and monitor performance metrics and monitoring of results
- Works with direct reports to develop strategies for addressing problems in achieving plan goals or in completing project action steps
- Coordinates with HQ and other Regional Leaders through the Patient Safety Executive Committee on projects or plans that are cross-regional and involve National accounts
Risk Identification and Solutions
Monitors portfolio for accounts with loss ratios exceeding expected performance and ensures identified accounts have appropriate Patient Safety support for solution development
Ensures required general service plans are developed and use appropriate closed claims data that address specific physician specialties, entity types, healthcare procedures, patient comorbidities, patient diagnoses, and other factors that contribute to patient injury
Communicates requirements for the capture of risk data (e.g. account-level, specialty comparison) and monitors compliance
Consolidates data on requested training, identifies requested training trends and participates in the planning (CME Committee) for development of CME and non-CME training to ensure Regional needs are addressed.
Assists in the development and maintenance of CME and non-CME training material and courses
People Leadership and Talent
- Clearly establish and communicate the roles, expectations, and responsibilities of each team member.
- Provide guidance and support to help employees achieve their performance and development goals.
- Communicate ongoing, constructive feedback to direct reports to recognize achievements, address challenges, and promote growth.
- Schedule and facilitate consistent 1:1 meeting and ensure the timely completion of performance review cycles to maintain alignment and accountability.
- Cultivate a culture of continuous learning, development, and innovation by supporting team members in pursuing new challenges and opportunities.
Business Process Optimization & Efficiency
- Identify and eliminate inefficiencies in business processes to improve operational performance, standardize workflows and improve cross-departmental collaboration
- Identify and/or Implement automation and digital tools opportunities to reduce manual efforts, increase capacity, efficiency and enhance accuracy of current processes
- Assign a process owner responsible for conducting regular process audits and managing KPIs to drive continuous improvement
- Facilitate working sessions to identify opportunities that can improve performance, increase productivity/efficiency, improve the customer experience, strengthen compliance and risk management, enhance agility, responsiveness and/or create a competitive advantage
Editorial Project Management
- Collaborates with the Senior Vice President of Patient Safety and Risk Management for the development of content creation that promote and support patient safety objectives.
- Oversees the activities of the Director of Patient Safety.
- Ensures effective communication is maintained with all stakeholders engaged in the patient safety editorial process.
- Overseeing the development and management of project plans and timelines for the creation of patient safety content.
- Maintains content quality, accuracy, and compliance with The Doctors Company brand standards.
- Evaluates the patient safety editorial workflow to identify opportunities for enhancement and promotes a constructive environment that encourages innovation.

- Accept delegated tasks willingly and follow through on assignments with accountability and attention to detail
- Support business process optimization and efficiency by identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing solutions as needed
- Take on various projects and assignments from management, ensuring timely completion and alignment with company goals
- Provide regular updates to leadership on assigned projects, meeting deadlines and delivering quality results
- Assist with department and company-wide initiatives, including research, surveys, audits, and process improvements
- Stay flexible and ready to take on additional responsibilities as needed to support team and organizational objectives
Salary Range: $183,269 - $240,567. Compensation varies based on skills, knowledge, and education. We consider factors such as specialized skills, depth of knowledge in the field, and educational background to ensure fair and competitive pay.
