The Role: Under the supervision of the Manager of Food Services/Chef, the Assistant Cook implements the cycle menu and assists other food service staff in cooking and preparing a variety of culturally diverse foods on a variety of equipment according to the needs of daily production.

Responsibilities:
Meal Prep
- Assist in the preparation of meals.
- Ensure that menus are followed, prepared, and meet government guidelines for portion size and nutritional components.
- Must be familiar with all operations of the kitchen and must be able to perform any task in the kitchen as needed and/or assigned.
- Ensure delivery of food at scheduled times and return of kitchen utensils and serving ware.
- Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen following federal, state, and local regulations.
- Maintain an updated inventory of food and kitchen materials.
- Ensures that all food products are properly stored, dated, and labeled.
- Follow the Sanitation schedule.
- Must wear appropriate uniform, headgear, and footwear while in the kitchen or on the premises.
- Assume additional responsibilities as assigned.
Other
- Arrive for work on time, in the kitchen with appropriate attire, and with consistent and regular attendance.
- Refer to the daily prep list at the start of each shift for the day’s assigned duties.
- Prepares culturally appropriate foods on a variety of equipment and adheres to designated cooking methods in accordance with New York City DOH food guidelines.
- Understands and complies with required portion sizes for specific age groups and completes work assignments in a timely manner.
- Plans meal prep in advance and maintains inventory to minimize the need for food substitutions,
(All food substitutions require approval).
- Ensure that foods are properly cooked, look appealing, and that there is ample food for the required servings. Ensure that prepped foods are properly stored and labeled.
- Work on the food service line as needed.
- Help maintain established sanitation and food safety standards during food preparation and storage as set by local and state agencies.
- Operates all equipment according to the manufacturer’s directions; especially safety guidelines. Notifies the Director of any malfunctions or damage to equipment.
- Under the guidance of the Manager of Food Services/Chef and Head Cook, helps prepare foods to meet the developmental needs of the clients and to meet the medical and feeding needs of clients with disabilities or food allergies.
- Attends and participates in mandated meetings and trainings as needed; participates in emergency drills.
- Performs all duties, assigned by the Manager of Food Services/Chef and/or the Head Cook.
Requirements:
- High School diploma or GED (knowledge of basic math) and Food Protection Certificate required.
- One –three-year experience in food services.
- Knowledge of NYC DOH food safety requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and time management skills.
- Able to work with minimal supervision while observing principles of quality cooking.
- Effective oral and communication skills commensurate with responsibilities.
- Be able to reach or bend and lift 40 pounds and stand up to 7.5 hours a day.
- Must be able to read labels and recipes.
- Background check and bi-annual physical examination required
