We currently have an opening for a part-time seasonal Historic Operating Machinery (HOM) Technician. This position is primarily responsible for the inspection, maintenance and repair of a specific class of historical machinery (agricultural, production, and/or stationary steam related) in the Village and Museum under the direction of the HOM Managers. In this role, you will provide technical expertise and knowledge of historical machinery to other teams across all areas of The Henry Ford (THF).


Essential Responsibilities

• Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs all mechanical artifacts in area of responsibility to ensure the safe and legal operation of the machinery.

• Performs routine maintenance tasks in area of responsibility.

• Coordinates assigned projects with other team members and volunteers.

• Assists in the maintenance of supplies, materials and tools.

• Provides mechanical design and analysis for replacement parts or new installation assemblies.

• Carries out research on assigned topics to broaden and increase depth of knowledge for areas of responsibility.

• Contributes to the effective team management of all problems, issues and opportunities.

• Acts as a team player and provides expertise within the team and with other teams as appropriate.

• Performs other duties as assigned.


Your Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED

• Working knowledge of a variety of power and hand tools

• Basic knowledge of historical materials and manufacturing processes


Preferred Qualifications & Special Skills

• Good oral and written communication skills;

• Knowledge of machining processes and mechanisms;

• Knowledge of parts manufacturing and machining using photos or broken pieces as example for fabricating new parts when they are not available for purchase;

• Knowledge of a variety of tools for general and specialized procedures.

• Research skills in both primary and secondary sources, including on-line searches.

• Work is conducted in a shop environment and outdoors in all weather. Indoor environment includes: smoke, exhaust, dust, dirt, loud noises, grease, chemical/process fumes and temperature fluctuations. Some tasks are performed outdoors in all seasons and in all weather.

• Occasional lifting, carrying and pushing up to 50 lbs.
