The Role

Research Toxicologist I

The Honest Company’s R&D team is hiring! We’re Looking for a Research Toxicologist I to support our research and innovation efforts surrounding our personal care and household cleaning. In this role, you’ll be expected to effectively assess health & safety risk of ingredients and formulas while upholding Honest's high standards for sustainable and safe ingredients. 

What you’ll do:

• Serve as subject matter expert for environmental toxicity of ingredients (fate, transport, degradation, and toxicity) as well as manufacturing processes (release, waste management, etc.)
• Support new product innovation by researching novel ingredients for potential human health and environmental toxicity.
• Provide recommendations on ingredient use per product type and end user by evaluating ingredients through literature review of peer reviewed journals, governmental publications, technical documents, clinical testing, and more.
• Provide risk-based recommendations for ingredient use levels that coincide with an appropriate margin of safety
• Streamline testing needs for direct release materials (wash-off products, cleaning products, laundry detergents, etc.)
• Support sustainability and circularity initiatives as they relate to environmental toxicity 
• Support the coordination of clinical testing and toxicological risk assessments, as needed.
• Assist with mechanistic investigations: development of hypothesis-driven research plans, in-vitro or clinical model development and qualification, and scientific project management
• Respond to incoming manufacturing and customer questions by providing detailed technical research-based information and documentation
• Investigate or characterize potential toxicity issues, including residuals or incidentals of concern, to enable raw material optimization and candidate nomination
• Support third-party certification applications as needed.
• Independently manage third-party certification application, audits, and technical communications as desired by the organization 

What you’ll need: 

• Bachelor’s degree in toxicology, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, public health or related scientific field
• Intermediate understanding of modes of action related to environmental and human health toxicology; basic understanding of mechanisms of action for chemicals in consumer products a plus
• 3 years experience in a science-based position
• Expertise in in-vitro/in-vivo acute, sub chronic, and chronic toxicological protocols
• Strong risk-assessment skills in ingredient safety, material selection, and exposure assessment
• Intermediate understanding of FDA, and EPA regulations as they relate to cosmetics, OTC drugs, and household cleaners

Bonus points:

• Experience working in cleaning products and/or surfactants toxicology
• Master’s degree in toxicology, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, public health or related scientific field
• Experience coordinating clinical testing of cosmetics or related products
• Expertise in dermal irritation, sensitization, and other clinical toxicity
• Background in skin biology
