SUMMARY
The John Cooper School is currently seeking an Upper School Counselor for the 26/27 school year.
The John Cooper School, located in The Woodlands, TX, on a beautiful 40-acre campus with a total enrollment of 1,300 students, is an independent, coeducational college preparatory day school serving students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. The Upper School (Grades 9-12) is a dynamic, caring, and collegial environment that fosters curiosity and joy in our learners.
The Counseling Program at Cooper is designed to address the social, emotional, and developmental needs of students, families, and faculty that arise within the community. The Upper School (US) Counselor may provide crisis management, ongoing support, coaching, and referrals to community and mental health resources. Consultation and collaboration with teachers, administrators, the Counseling department, families, and outside mental health professionals help to provide seamless service and support to students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as a member of the Counseling Department; attend department meetings and consult with other division counselors
- Participate in a weekly meeting with the Upper School Leadership Team
- Provide ongoing evaluation, assessment, and support of students who are referred by administrators, faculty, staff, parents, and student self-referrals
- Provide crisis intervention
- Provide referrals for outside counseling, therapy, and psychological treatment or evaluation
- Serve as liaison for students receiving external psychological treatment
- Serve as an advisor to a small group of students
- Be available to administrators, faculty, staff, and parents for consultation and support
- Participate in school-related conferences, training, and committee work
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Master’s degree in counseling, social work, or other mental health field
- Two years of counseling experience in a school-based setting; independent school experience preferred
- Experience with wellness and social-emotional learning curriculum
- Effective interview and communication techniques with students, parents, teachers, and administrators
- Strong commitment to students’ progress, success, and social-emotional well-being
- Knowledge of current best practices in Upper School education
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and desire to approach planning and innovation in a team environment
- Model lifelong learning for students with an openness to and enthusiasm for learning and professional growth
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues
- Strong organizational skills
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Required to walk; stoop, kneel or crouch; reach with hands and arms
- Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 90% walking, and standing
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds
