Vice Dean of Education

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine seeks a dynamic and visionary Vice Dean of Education (VDE) who will play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of medical and biomedical education and advancing the institution’s tripartite mission of education, research, and clinical care. This nationally recognized thought leader is responsible for the modernization and technological advancement of the education mission of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and will oversee all education and training programs within the School of Medicine. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the institution remains at the forefront of medical education, integrating cutting-edge technology and innovative teaching methods to enhance the learning experience and maintain position as national leader in medical education.

Since the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s founding in 1893, it has broken new ground and set standards for medical education across the globe. Today, the School of Medicine is a world leader in medical education and innovation and the VDE position is crucial to both the continued success of the School of Medicine and to the overall strength of Johns Hopkins Medicine. The education and training missions of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine are to educate medical students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in accordance with the highest professional standards; to prepare clinicians to practice patient-centered medicine of the highest standard; and to prepare investigators to identify and answer fundamental questions in the mechanisms, prevention, and treatment of disease in health care delivery and in the basic sciences.

Reporting to the Dean of the Medical Faculty, the Vice Dean of Education will serve as the primary institutional leader for the broad portfolio of medical education programs in the School of Medicine and will directly oversee all aspects of medical education, working collaboratively with other institutional leaders who have primary responsibilities for other educational programs within the school. This is a unique opportunity to propel novel educational programs for one of the nation’s most respected and entrepreneurial medical schools.

The successful candidate will be an institutional thinker, collaborative leader, innovator and superb communicator, who will bring a knowledge of the trends in medical education and have a deep understanding of the changing landscape of academic medicine. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of leading innovative educational programs. The individual should also have a proven capacity to partner and collaborate with department chairs, health system leaders, deans and medical education leaders at both the strategic and operational levels.

The successful candidate will have the ability to oversee successful reaccreditation, including with the LCME. Candidates should also have a demonstrated record of innovation in medical education and facilitating cross-disciplinary connections to advance medical education. Further, a sophisticated understanding of workforce trends, resource planning, and the evolving dynamics of sponsored research funding will be essential to stewarding educational programs through a period of transformation and growth.

The expected base pay salary range for this position is $130,000 to $300,000. The base compensation will vary based on the selected candidate's specialty.

This salary range reflects base compensation, and does not include all components of the School of Medicine’s compensation program, including eligibility for a discretionary bonus. Therefore, the actual compensation paid to the selected candidate may vary from the base salary range stated herein. For more information, please contact the hiring department.

Total Rewards

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
