Who We Are:
The Local Butcher Shop is an award-winning Berkeley institution specializing in whole-animal craft butchery and locally produced, regenerative meat. We are a zero-waste business and an employee-owned cooperative—ownership is open to all employees after one year of service. In addition to fresh meat, we offer a wide variety of value-added products, including sausages, deli meats, charcuterie, stocks, soups, stews, and pet treats—all made in-house—along with sandwiches and resale pantry items.
About the Role:
We’re currently hiring a Kitchen Assistant to support the production of our house-made items. This is a hands-on, behind-the-scenes role ideal for someone looking to deepen their understanding of butchery, seasonal cooking, and traditional food preparation. You’ll work alongside a dedicated and skilled team that values curiosity, precision, and care for ingredients.
Duties include:
- Assisting with production of soups, stocks, stews, sauces, and more
- Helping make sausages, pâtés, deli meats, and other value-added products
- Packaging and labeling retail items for display
- Keeping kitchen and equipment clean and organized
- Supporting butchers and the kitchen manager with prep and cleanup tasks
- Working efficiently while maintaining food safety and cleanliness standards
Our Ideal Candidate:
- Has basic kitchen experience or culinary training (professional or home-based)
- Is dependable, hardworking, and excited to learn traditional food skills
- Communicates clearly and works well in a team
- Enjoys talking about food and ingredients with customers (as needed)
- Is available weekends and some evenings
- Can lift 50 lbs and work on your feet for extended periods
Schedule & Compensation:
- Shifts are typically 7:30 AM–4 PM or 11:30 AM–8 PM, five days per week
- Availability during holidays is required (our busiest season is November–December)
- Starting wage is $19.18/hour tips
- Ownership opportunities available after one year
