What are the responsibilities and job description for the Opening Lifeguard position at The Merion Cricket Club?

POSITION PURPOSE

The Opening Lifeguard’s primary duty is to ensure the safety of every member and guest who enter the Aquatics Complex. The Opening Lifeguard completes tasks to prepare the pool for membership use. This individual must ensure that the pool is impeccably clean and the pool appearance holds up to the MCC standards. They are to proactively set-up for the programming for each day. Must be an individual who possesses proper judgement skills in order to maintain order in the pool area as well as appropriately respond to any accident or emergency without management supervision. The opening guard must possess a safety-first mindset, and able to set the tone for each day by ensuring the pool is prepared for all activity that a given day entails.

HOURS

Opening Lifeguards report to their shift at 5:30 a.m. as the MCC Pool opens at 6:00 a.m. This individual is expected to work at minimum (1) weekend day. The MCC Pool opens mid-May and ends on the last day of September. There are additional opportunities for opening shifts in April in October.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ensure safety of membership by constant surveillance of pool and pool areas
  • Ability to complete tasks without management supervision
  • Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of the pool and pool areas, this includes but is not limited to; logging chemicals, cleaning filters, scrubbing tiles, skimming water, sweeping the deck, and additional duties if necessary
  • Perform an opening walk through and report necessary information to management
  • Maintain pool logs, incident/accident reports, locker room checks and other documents as required
  • Proactively set-up for daily programming including: lap swim, aquatic fitness, camp swim and family swim
  • Judgement and confidence to enforce rules, safety, and independently respond to an emergency
  • Administer first aid, CPR, and file incident reports
  • Assist with family swim duties including: greeting members, assisting with check-in, hoping in rotation, towel and water service, and additional help as requested
  • Observe service culture mission statement to provide outstanding service to members and guests
  • Respect to all membership and staff, strong ability to collaborate and work in a team environment
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required
  • Maintain current certifications
  • Maintain physical fitness
  • Perform other related duties as required

REQUIREMENTS

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Completion of Lifeguard training and/or current certification
  • First Aid and CPR certifications
  • AED certification
  • Ability to work extended shifts with sun exposure and/or high temperature
  • Physically fit, strong, demonstrated swimming ability
  • Ability to use water test kit
  • Proficient communication skills
  • Exhibit strong judgement skills
  • Team-oriented personality
  • Passion for member service, eager to build and maintain culture of member service excellence

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Wet and/or humid environment, high levels of noise and activity, exposure to sun and other weather conditions, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to communicate clearly and relay important information accurately, clearly, and loudly
  • Ability to clearly see at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more
  • Advanced ability to swim, surface dive, swim underwater, and tread water
  • Ability to recover any casualty from deep water to surface, out of water, and to a point of safety
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects either above or underwater
  • Ability to pull and drag large objects
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods at a time

  • Maintaining the safety of all members and staff by identifying and correcting risk situations, writing incident reports, etc.

  • Keeping the children in the care of the Merion Cricket Club and participating in programming within the club safe from harm and reporting signs and suspicions of abuse when necessary to the requisite state agency
