Position Summary
NewBoCo is looking to hire a Director of Development (DOD) to develop, lead and implement a strategy to increase the size, scope and capability of the non-profit organization. The DOD will oversee, plan, and implement a comprehensive program for NewBoCo that secures significant philanthropic resources from individuals, corporations, and foundations for NewBoCo’s entrepreneurship, innovation and technical education programming; on a statewide and national scale. This position will be deeply involved in a wide variety of exciting projects and events that NewBoCo creates and manages. This role requires significant experience in donor stewardship, securing major gifts (including planned giving & multi-year fundraising campaigns), business development, endowment building, and experience managing a team. Additionally, the DOD is personally responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of donors capable of making six figure gifts over time. This position requires a person who is a strong, inspiring, results-driven, and accountable leader able to collaborate with a number of NewBoCo team members, community partners, and stake-holders.
Responsibilities:
- Managing the development team and leading efforts to fundraise in excess of $1.6 million annually in support of NewBoCo’s programming and organizational priorities.
- Developing and communicating a vision with multi-year fundraising goals, and accountability to achieve these goals.
- Work with the Assistant Director of Development to create grant strategy and plan for implementation.
- Building a planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequest expectancies.
- Developing and building an endowment for the organization.
- Maintaining and growing strategic relationships both outside (donors/corporate partners) and within the organization (NewBoCo staff/Board of Directors).
- Conceiving, designing, and leading strategic initiatives and goals through collaboration with NewBoCo leadership in order to enhance overall performance in accordance with short and long-term objectives.
- Financial management of programs; setting budget and fundraising objectives, analyzing results, and taking corrective actions.
- Demonstrated ability to stay focused on the big picture and not get mired in the details.
- Providing regular updates, reports, and projections to our staff and our Board of Directors.
- Responsible for leading, managing, and accountability for the Revenue Generating Team of 3-5 by helping the team determine overall direction and prioritization of work.
Qualifications:
- 7 years related experience
- Experience asking for and closing major gifts of $50,000 or more
- Experience working with donors on, and securing, gifts of stock, real estate and other tangible assets.
- Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations, and corporations.
- Experience in planning and delivering budgetary responsibilities.
- Experience managing and supervising a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience, coursework, or other training in principles, practices, and procedures of charitable giving, particularly in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts, and planned giving.
- Ability to develop and execute plans independently.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience developing marketing plans and strategies to support fundraising efforts.
- Strong public speaking, community relations, and PR skills.
- Experience identifying, writing, and securing major grant dollars.
- Willingness to travel, as needed, to build donor relationships across the state of Iowa.
Preferred Knowledge & Skills:
- An appreciation for the mission of NewBoCo and shared core values
- Experience working in a mid-range, fast-paced, nonprofit environment
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent training/experience
- Knowledge in current and evolving trends in the fundraising, entrepreneurship, and tech education spaces
- Understanding of best practices in nonprofit leadership and management
- Reasonable expertise in using social media (Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, Google for Business
- Expertise in CRM systems
Some details to know:
- This is a full-time, salaried role commensurate with experience
- Requires flexibility to work limited evening and weekend hours (rare, but may occur throughout the year) as needed for meetings, projects and events
