The North Carolina Biotechnology Center is a private, state-funded non-profit with a mission to advance life sciences in North Carolina. The LSED team is critical to this mission as the primary team focused on bringing new life sciences jobs and investment to our state and promoting life sciences training initiatives.
The NCBiotech Center is currently seeking a Workforce Development Director.
Purpose
The Workforce Development Director is a member of the Life Sciences Economic Development (LSED) team. This position directs NCBiotech’s programs related to the development of North Carolina’s life sciences workforce. The Workforce Development Director provides leadership in managing numerous external partnerships that are essential to the development of talent and workforce to support North Carolina’s life sciences community.
Supervisory Responsibility
Personnel reporting to this position include Associate Director, Workforce Development and Program Manager, Military Outreach & Veterans Engagement. This position may supervise contracted program coordinator(s) and potential new hire(s).
Essential Duties
- Leads the creation, development and implementation of strategic workforce development programs critical to NC’s growing life sciences industry.
- Develops and manages relationships with key external stakeholders including K-12 educators and community outreach organizations, community colleges, universities, and industry.
- Oversees talent engagement programs including NCBiotech’s Military Outreach & Veterans Engagement (MOVE) Program, the NC Life Sciences Apprenticeship Consortium, and youth programming including NIIMBL bioLOGIC.
- Coordinates workforce development-related activities led by staff from across NCBiotech to provide continuity, expand effectiveness, and maximize resource utilization. Key programs include NCBiotech Career Center, Industrial Internship Program, NC CRO Collaborative, and NCBiotech Exchange Groups.
- Manages expansion, scaling, and sustainability of successful programs including the identification and pursuit of alternate funding sources.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Technical understanding of the life sciences.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build credibility with stakeholders, including excellent written communication, presentation, and speaking skills.
- Collaborative disposition with strong relationship development skills to effectively manage people, projects, and partnerships.
- Ability to lead and contribute to internal and external partnerships and teams, creating alignment towards defined goals and outcomes.
- Strong time management and organizational skills, with an emphasis on attention to detail and follow-through to implement long-term relationship management activities; ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
- Ability to work independently with emphasis on accountability and communication.
- Excellent computer skills in applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, HubSpot, and Smartsheet. Familiarity with social media and other marketing platforms.
- Comfort in reviewing, negotiating, and managing contracts, agreements, and grants.
- Ability to travel regionally dependent on business demands. Occasional domestic travel (2-4 trips per year)
Minimum Education and Experience Required
Minimum – Bachelor’s degree in life sciences related area of study with 5 years management-level, economic development, and/or workforce development experience at a life sciences company or academic training institution, or equivalent.
Preferred – Two years of supervisory experience. Substantial knowledge of North Carolina’s life sciences community including workforce training partners, academic institutions, resources, and major employers.
Salary and Benefits
Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits offered include 23 days of PTO plus 10 holidays and a floating holiday of your choosing per year. Generous sick, bereavement and volunteer leave are also provided. NCBiotech has a commitment to continuous learning and development, expecting 5% of employee time spent on related activities. Attendance and participation in professional associations is expected and supported.
