JOB DESCRIPTION:
The AVID Tutor will perform the necessary duties to assist in the planning and implementation of instructional support and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students’ academic success through a defined course of study.
Essential Functions:
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers in order to coordinate instructional efforts.
Tutor and assist students individually or in small groups in order to help students’ master content and to reinforce learning concepts presented by faculty.
Conduct instructional activities assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small groups for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching their academic goals and grade-level standards.
Provide feedback to the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
Provide direct instruction of students under direct supervision of resource or core teacher.
Assist with the administration and scoring of testing instruments or work assignments.
Assist students in improving organizational strategies to include: binder with calendar, assignment sheets, tutorial worksheets, and daily notes in academic classes.
Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials.
Assist in classroom management.
May participate in teacher-parent conferences regarding students’ progress.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED, and ONE of the following:
Completion of two years of higher education study (48 units), OR
Possession of an Associate's or higher level degree
Experience working in an instructional environment preferred
Experience or education in the areas of child development preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Communicate effectively with students and adults both orally and in writing.
Ability to understand and effectively carry out both oral and written directions in an independent manner.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, instructional staff and parents.
Classroom procedures, professionalism and appropriate student conduct.
Ability to work confidentially and with discretion.
Ability to take direction from supervisor.
Work Environment:
This job operates in an indoor classroom environment. The employee’s primary responsibility is working with high school students in a classroom and/or instructional environment. The position is also in frequent contact with the staff and public and noise level is moderate.

The physical abilities described below are those that must be met by an employee to successfully carry out the essential functions of the position.
Work in varying degrees of temperature (heated or air conditioned).
Position requires sitting for extended periods; frequently standing and walking.
Position requires extended use of computers/laptops.
Position requires continual mental concentration and specific attention to detail.
Position requires light to moderate work with 25 lbs maximum weight to lift and carry.
Position requires reaching, bending, stooping and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing and seeing.
Enter data into a computer and operate standard office equipment.
See and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the “core” work hours between 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and must work 20 hours each week to maintain part-time status.
