JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Animal Science at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a tenure-line faculty position in Equine Reproductive Physiology. Candidates will be considered for appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The position responsibilities are 50% extension, 25% teaching, and 25% research. This is a full-time, 48-week, appointment.

The Penn State Equine Science Program seeks to continue its growth as a flagship academic and research enterprise by hiring an equine reproductive veterinarian to provide extension education programs for equine professionals, breeding barn managers, and equine veterinarians. In addition, this individual will be expected to establish an applied equine reproductive research program, secure extramural funding, teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students studying equine reproduction, and oversee breeding and foaling of our nationally recognized Penn State Quarter Horse herd.

The successful candidate will deliver impactful extension programming focused on reproductive practices, fertility, and equine healthcare and management. This individual will develop new extension programs and collaborate on existing extension programs utilizing a variety of methodologies including in-person workshops, online webinars, podcasts, videos, social media posts, and other media as appropriate. In addition, this successful candidate will be expected to develop an equine reproductive research program that dovetails well with the established Quarter Horse breeding program. Research at the intersection of reproduction with nutrition and/or exercise physiology is preferred, with ample opportunity to collaborate with faculty in Penn State's Center for Reproductive Biology and Health (CRBH). Securing external research funding is expected. The successful applicant will mentor graduate students and further develop the equine reproduction component of the Equine Science Minor, including advising and mentoring students pursuing careers in veterinary medicine and equine studies. Specific courses to be taught include Equine Reproduction and Breeding Farm Management, Equine Broodmare and Foal Care, and portions of Horse Production and Management. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with the veterinary care of the Quarter Horse herd. As a member of the faculty, they will be expected to engage in appropriate service and professional activities within and outside the Department.

Applicants must have a D.V.M. to be considered for the position. Strong preference will be given to candidates with expertise in equine theriogenology. Applied equine breeding farm experience, horsemanship skills, and strong professional connections in the horse industry are preferred. Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills are essential. Applicants with demonstrated experience in equine research, with a past record of successful funding, are preferred. Applicants with experience teaching in classroom or clinical situations related to horses, equine reproduction, and equine health are preferred. The successful candidate must have all completed all degree requirements by the appointment date.

The Department of Animal Science at Penn State includes 34 faculty members and is home to internationally recognized programs in animal reproduction, nutrition, physiology, and genetics. This faculty member will be part of a team of equine faculty, extension educators and associates, and equine staff that collaborate to support equine teaching, extension, and research efforts. The Penn State Quarter Horse breeding program includes 65-75 high quality horses, made up of broodmares, stallions, and young stock. The breeding program produces between 15-25 foals annually, ultimately bound for sale as 2-year-olds as a part of Penn State's Quarter Horse Sale. The breeding enterprise has provided significant financial support for the barn through sales and breeding services. The Equine Program maintains a close working relationship with equine professionals and industry stakeholders in Pennsylvania and across the United States.
