What are the responsibilities and job description for the RESEARCH EDITOR position at The Poynter Institute?
The Poynter Institute and its fact-checking initiative PolitiFact is seeking a Research Editor to manage a series of business to business (B2B) research and fact-checking projects.
PolitiFact is best known for its detailed reporting and fact-checking journalism that help voters sort fact from fiction online and in politicians’ statements. In the past several years, PolitiFact has begun working directly with companies to provide B2B research and fact-checking services. As the Research Editor, you will manage a team of full-time and contract staff that completes these B2B research projects — which can include anything from reviewing political or breaking news claims or learning about coral reefs or the Northern Lights. The work is varied and shifting, but the skill set is not.
We’re looking for a seasoned journalist who can demonstrate the ability to get to the bottom of any research challenge. We also want someone who has experience managing teams and can help PolitiFact’s executive director manage the relationship with our B2B clients.
An ideal candidate will have the following qualities :
- Experience managing journalists or researchers.
- Exceptional managerial, organization and communication skills.
- Technical proficiencies in products such as Zoom, Slack and Google Suite.
- Data reporting or deep online research skills.
- Excels in high-stress, deadline environments.
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or a reasonable amount of experience as an equivalent.
Candidates with the following skills or traits are particularly invited to apply :
PolitiFact is a newsroom of more than 30 full-timers and freelance journalists working from offices in Washington, D.C., and St. Petersburg, Florida, and remote locations. The Research Editor is expected to work from one of our offices two days per week as part of our hybrid work schedule. We’d consider remote employment for certain candidates.
Since 2018, PolitiFact has been owned by the Poynter Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that has long represented the gold standard for the professional development of journalists. We help journalists improve their craft, commit to the highest ethical practices, hone career ambitions and develop newsroom strategies. Along with our training and development programs, Poynter is home to The Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership, the International Fact-Checking Network and MediaWise.
Poynter aims to create best practices to guide quality journalism around the world. That goal is best served by a multigenerational staff that embodies a range of life experiences and viewpoints. We are committed to diversity and an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds.
