Research Specialist employees help to develop, design, and conduct one or more small to moderately complex research projects in line with plans. They report to one or more faculty members or senior research personnel, operate with a degree of independence, and help improve research approach and methods based on knowledge and experience. They are distinguished from Research Coordinator employees by their knowledge and ability to use a variety of research techniques, and exercise independent decision-making in their use. They may collaborate in the writing and publication process. They may help present findings at conferences and meetings. Help formulate research methods, suggest options for improving quality, identify potential problems, recommend solutions, and collaborate in the development of new techniques. Help develop protocol and criteria, determine interview procedures, and approve protocols. Independently operate equipment and perform laboratory techniques. May explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes. Collect, screen, and verify data. Conduct data analyses and interpret and implement research methodology based on outcomes of analyses. May help author material for publications. May participate in presentations with Principal Investigators (PIs) at meetings or conferences. May supervise non-exempt research or support staff and/or student workers.
