Sunday School Teacher (Volunteer Role)
Location: The Riverside Church in the City of New York (New York, NY)
Reports to: Minister of Children & Families
Department: Children & Families
Schedule: Sundays, 10:00am – 1:00pm
Salary Range: Unpaid
Date: September 15th to June 8th
Job Summary:
- Abides by all Safe Sanctuary policies of the Riverside Church at all times.
- Complete CPR course
- Engage with children ages 4-12 years in organized activities during Church School, i.e., age-appropriate songs, stories, lessons, crafts, etc.
- Responsible for providing age-appropriate care which includes: escorting to the bathroom, maintaining a safe environment, or sitting with and cheerfully interacting with children through games, stories, play and prayer. Universal precautions should always be used while time of body fluids.
- Ensures safety of the classroom environment, i.e., cleaning products and medications stored out of reach of children, outlet covers on electrical outlets, etc.
- Collaborate with other Church School teachers and the Minister of Children & Families.
- Report any issues or concerns regarding children and fellow Church School Teachers to the Minister of Children & Families.
- Participate in all workshops and trainings as presented by the Minister of Children & Families.
- Church School Teachers are expected to work holidays that fall on Sunday and may be asked to work additional hours during busy times, i.e., Holy week.
- Additionally, the Church School Teacher will also perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

- Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to the ethics of good character, humility, and servant leadership.

- Ability to lift at least 50 pounds and actively participate in all activities.
- Valid ID and reliable transportation.
- Satisfactory drug test and satisfactory background check for criminal and child protective findings.
- Spanish language proficiency a plus, but not required.
- Experience in caring for children between the ages of 4 to 12 with the ability to adapt and interact with a variety of personalities.
