Roeper is currently recruiting for a part-time, 50% of full-time English Teacher for our Middle School.
Position Summary
The Middle School English Teacher is an expert in their field who will primarily teach multiple sections of grade-level core English classes in a variety of genres and some elective classes. Roeper provides teachers with autonomy to develop an educational program that is driven by student interest and a shared passion for learning.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver multiple class sections of a grade-level core English class along with English electives tailored to gifted students.
- Develop, implement, and sustain a curriculum that centers on reading and composition (including grammar and mechanics) while fostering critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative skills in students.
- Implement and sustain classroom curriculum that fosters students’ critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative skills.
- Engage with students and faculty members in Inquiry-Based and Project Based Learning, including the annual middle school interdisciplinary week.
- Serve as a faculty advisor to a Middle School Homeroom, including modeling and utilizing principles of restorative justice.
- Facilitate the social and emotional development of the students; demonstrate care and consideration for each student.
- Assess students individually, primarily through narrative reports that focus on holistic growth.
- Communicate regularly with students and families, including conferences, progress updates and narrative semester reports.
- Collaborate with colleagues in development and documentation of curriculum, as well as the scope and sequence of disciplinary skills.
- Collaborate with other teachers in implementing a multicultural and culturally relevant curriculum.
- Communicate with parents regarding program, curriculum, instruction, and assessment including participation in back-to-school nights, parent-teacher conferences, and similar events.
- Attend scheduled faculty and staff meetings and professional learning activities, including Back-to-School Week and designated Professional Development days.
- Undertake a reasonable and equitable number of non-instructional supervisions as assigned
- Model positive behaviors for students and colleagues that align with the school’s core values.
- Maintain effective, respectful, and gracious communication with other teachers, colleagues, and administration.
- Support and collaborate with Lower School faculty, staff, and administration to meet the overall mission of The Roeper School
Skills:
- Experience and competency in designing, developing, and delivering a curriculum that is age-appropriate for gifted adolescent students
- Ability to offer engaging, participatory, and challenging classes
- Expertise in a variety of literary genres, composition, and grammar
- Interest and competency to deliver content in social studies, including knowledge of different historical eras, global studies, and world history
- Knowledge/experience working with gifted learners
- Excellent instructional and communication skills
- Ability to form collaborative work relationships
- Demonstrated commitment to cultural competency work in order to perform responsibilities in accordance with Roeper's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- A collegial approach and congenial temperament
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, English Language Arts, Literature or related field
- Three to five years experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Teaching certification preferred but not required
