Grade 5 ASSOCIATE TEACHER (History / Social Studies Focus)

Full-time position to begin August 2025

Overview

The Associate Teacher Program at the Spence School provides the foundation for beginning educators who aspire to become lead teachers in their own classrooms. Associates typically remain at Spence for two years, a timeframe that allows them to gain broad and increasingly deep experience. Associates are paired with Head Teachers, who mentor them in the following areas:

• The craft of teaching and the development of curriculum
• Strategies for teaching, including differentiation of instruction
• Classroom management
• Student assessment
• Development of personal teaching style
• Communication with parents
• Active observation of students
• Weekly planning

Responsibilities

• Co-teach three sections of Grade 5 History / Social Studies
• Co-lead a Grade 5 homeroom
• Co-teach additional Grade 5 classes as needed
• Attend all faculty and grade level meetings
• Attend parent programs and meetings
• Participate in school-wide professional development
• Work with students to support their social and emotional development

Qualifications and Qualities

• Working toward MA, MFA or MS (ideally received or enrolled in program)
• Has experience working with Middle School aged children
• Finds joy in working with children and in school life
• Approaches work with optimism, energy, kindness and a sense of humor
• Demonstrates cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
• Supports Spence’s commitment to equity and inclusion
• Has a disposition toward learning from and with colleagues about teaching practice
• Content-relevant knowledge or experience (through education or work) in Literacy and/or Social-Studies
