We are Thomas Law and we provide expertise in non-solicitation agreements, non-compete agreements, breach of contract issues, and commercial landlord/tenant issues in Fairfax, VA, and the greater Washington, DC area.
We are looking to hire a full-time mostly virtual Legal Assistant, but you must be within a commutable distance to our office in Fairfax County so that you can stop by the office a few times a week if needed, to meet clients to obtain documents and/or pick up the mail, drop off items to the courthouse, etc. If you prefer to work full-time in the office, that may be an option, too, for the right candidate. So, this role may be mostly virtual and/or hybrid.
Although we understand that life happens, we are looking for the most suitable candidate to help support our long-term success. So, this is NOT a position for someone who is looking for a stepping stone to becoming an attorney. Rather, this position is most suitable for an individual committed to paralegal work, who really loves serving clients and assisting attorneys to make their lives a bit easier.
What is it like to work here?
This role is for someone who enjoys working independently with excellent time and task management. Someone who likes to work hard, handle multiple responsibilities at once- so a master juggler of sorts- and who thrives in a fast-paced work setting- this could be the role for you! The successful candidate should be able to work remotely (but must reside in or around Fairfax County) to achieve daily assignments from 8:30 am – 5:30 pm (flexible), and have dedicated home office space and a sound internet connection. You will have autonomy; we will not look over your shoulder. And there is not much, if any, overtime in this position.
What will you do on a typical day?
- Copy, scan, and organize legal materials, case filings, correspondence, and office documents
- Work with attorneys to format and file documents, exhibits, pleadings, and briefs relating to court hearings, trials, appeals and various motions
- Docket and calendar management, schedule meetings, reserve conference rooms and arrange for video teleconferences
- Communicate status updates to current clients and answer routine client questions
- Order office supplies and oversee day-to-day office administration and management tasks
- Liaise with Intake Coordinator
- Help make the attorney's lives a bit easier, enabling their success
- Minimum of an Associate’s degree and 1-3 years’ experience working as a legal assistant in a law office preferred
- Computer Skills: Ability to perform standard functions in software applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel databases, Adobe Acrobat, One Drive, and specialized office systems. Knowledge of Lexis Nexis and Clio is a plus
- Professional Communication Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills when interacting with clients, court personnel, clerk's office, clients, and potential clients
- Professionalism: Ability to work and interact professionally and effectively with others, meet established deadlines, and work in a high-intensity litigation environment
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to multi-task, be flexible, think on your feet, and make decisions based on good common sense
- Ability to closely follow established policies and procedures
- Ability to learn from constructive feedback
- Ability to genuinely connect with clients and potential clients in a professional manner
- Ability to deal with the occasional difficult individual, with grace and professionalism
Who will thrive in this role?
Someone who is:
- Hard-working, takes the initiative and can work independently
- Able to think under pressure and multi-task
- Able to switch tasks and is able to adapt to changing and sometimes urgent deadlines
- Incredibly organized with court filing deadlines, etc.
- Not pleased with misspellings and wrong punctuation; you are a master with grammar, spelling, and the like
- A list-maker and will follow through without being reminded
- Able to exercise sound judgment
