SA/MH Counselor Job Description
- Able to Understand a variety of models and theories of addiction and other problems related to substance use.
- Ability to describe the philosophies, practices, policies, and outcomes of the most generally accepted and scientifically supported models of treatment, recovery, relapse prevention, and continuing care for addiction and other substance-related problems.
- Ability to recognize the importance of family, social networks, community systems, and self-help groups in the treatment and recovery process.
- Recognizes the social, political, economic, and cultural context within which addiction and substance abuse exist, including risk and resiliency factors that characterize individuals and groups and their living environments.
- Describe the behavioral, psychological, physical health, and social effects of psychoactive substances on the person using and significant others.
- Recognizes the potential for substance use disorders to mimic a variety of medical and mental health conditions and the potential for medical and mental health conditions to coexist with addiction and substance abuse.
- Maintain personal safety and adhere to all safety policies and procedures
Mental Health and/or Substance Abuse Counselor Competencies
- Ensure that all applicable policies and procedures that fall within the scope of the job description are followed and adhered to.
- Perform screening and assessments of clients referred for services including functional assessment, psychological history, mental status exam, financial information, demographics, performs periodic updates as needed, determine and coordinate appropriate services.
- Development treatment plan in consultation with client, significant others, and/or family members.
- Present treatment plan to the Clinical Director for review and sign off, update treatment plan as required by policy, ensure that treatment plan meets all documented requirements.
- Provide individual , group, family and other therapy as clinically indicated and determined by the approved treatment plan, document all therapy services as directed by policy and procedure in a timely manner, utilize best practice protocols for all therapeutic interventions.
- Work with the case managers with case management functions of assessments, planning/linking, referral, advocacy, and monitoring as directed by Clinical Supervisor.
- Handle crisis calls and situations in an effective manner, communicates all relevant information to the appropriate supervisor.
- Follows all safety procedures and guidelines to reduce rick to clients and other individuals
- May collect urine samples
- Required to attend all mandatory training specified by policy as directed by Clinical Supervisor.
- May provide or arrange transportation for clients as needed.
- Must perform the major functions of the job with or without accommodations.
- Be available to work all shifts to ensure proper coverage per contact and policy standards.
- Complete and maintain all required clinical documents per the Company Policy, Counselors handbook, and the F.C.A 65-D-30.
- Must be able to speak, read, write and understand English.
- To be eligible for a promotion to a supervisory position you must demonstrate organizational abilities and must have good written and oral communications.
- Report all unsafe conditions that could affect clients or employees which you become aware of to your immediate supervisor.
- Any other duties or responsibilities assigned to you by your Clinical Supervisor
