This position is located off campus at Dell Children’s Medical Center (4900 Mueller Blvd, Austin, Tx). It is expected that work is conducted on-site. This position is considered essential in its support of clinical operations for the program. Purpose To provide clinical neurogenetic consultation services. The majority of patients currently seen have epilepsy, brain malformations, neurodevelopmental disorders and/or neuromuscular disorders. Provide patient education, counseling, coordinate testing, facilitate decision-making, and make referrals as necessary. Responsibilities Provide genetic counseling to individuals identified with predisposing characteristics or at potentially elevated risk for neurogenetics disorders. This includes the ability to elicit and interpret individual and family medical histories, provide risk assessment, communicate pertinent disease and risk information clearly, provide counseling regarding genetic testing including the results. Variant analysis and test interpretation using ExAC/gnomAD, ClinVar, HGMD, and other disease-specific databases, and discussion of diagnostic test results with the neurogenetics team to determine further management and workup. Assist patients and families to understand genetic predisposition disease, including options and limitations of prevention strategies. Counsel patients on potential adverse effects of positive gene test; discuss limitations of negative gene tests. Provide follow-up including arranging consultations with other specialists, completing consultation reports, obtaining outside medical records or specimens, working with financial counselor to facilitate authorization for patients' insurance coverage for genetic testing, communication with patients and family. Facilitate the identification of patients suitable for genetic counseling and clinical research protocols. Assist with clinical studies, developing educational materials, reviewing patient charts, contacting family members, and conducting public and professional presentations. Participate in design, writing or editing of research protocols. If desired, initiate new research projects in consultation with a faculty member and work with the team to implement these projects. Required Qualifications Master's degree in genetic counseling or a related field. Eligible to apply for active candidate status for the American Board of Genetic Counseling ABGC certification exam. Equivalent combination of relevant Thorough knowledge of special equipment used in the field of research. Preferred Qualifications Certified Genetic Counselor with a degree from an accredited Genetic Counseling program. Prior experience in Neurology and/or Pediatrics.
