    General Notes

    Substantial travel is associated with the position. Those selected will be required to attend a mandatory training in May. Overtime in the amount of 40 hours is expected.

    Purpose

    Be the geoscience content expert and instruct 40-45 high school students for one week during the GeoFORCE Traveling or Virtual Academies.

    Responsibilities

    • Deliver short lectures before visiting field locations or exploring a geoscience topic.
    • Act as the geoscience content expert in partnership with an educational coach, guiding students through geoscience content and delivering relevant and insightful curricular context to the field stops or subject points outlined in GeoFORCE guidebooks and planning schedules.
    • Contribute to the instructional database of the GeoFORCE Texas program, adding new content and best practices in geoscience field learning as described by geoscience education literature.
    • Conduct daily debriefs with the instructional team and GeoFORCE coordinators.
    • Work collaboratively with all staff members and communicate any issues which may arise regarding instruction to the trip coordinator and appropriate team member(s).
    • Serve as mentor to student counselors and program participants.
    • Other duties as assigned by trip coordinator.


    Required Qualifications

    • Two or more years of post-Baccalaureate education.
    • Ability to commit to an entire field experience and a potential active schedule of 6:00am – 10:00pm


    Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Ph.D. in geoscience or geoscience education field.
    • Experience teaching secondary school students.
    • Experience managing and delivering science enrichment programs. Ability to communicate effectively with various populations, including corporate and private sponsors, students, University faculty/research scientists and staff, secondary school faculty and staff, and parents.
    • Demonstrated ability to work simultaneously with large numbers of students.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with accuracy and attention to detail.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently as well as a team member.
    • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, use good judgment, pay attention to detail and handle multiple tasks.


    Salary Range

    $40/hour

    • May work around standard office conditions.
    • Climbing of stairs and long hikes.
    • Will involve airplane, bus, and/or automobile travel.

    Employment Eligibility:

    Regular staff who have been employed in their current position for the last six continuous months are eligible for openings being recruited for through University-Wide or Open Recruiting, to include both promotional opportunities and lateral transfers.     Retirement Plan Eligibility:

    The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
