    This position provides for work-life balance with typically a 40-hour work week that includes flexible work arrangements. Payroll Services at The University of Texas at Austin is responsible for producing and distributing payroll for approximately 29,000 employees. Payroll processes monthly, semi-monthly and off-cycle payrolls for employees of the university. Our Benefits and Deductions Teams are responsible for deducting, remitting and reporting payroll deductions and other payroll information to UT System Administration, state and federal agencies, and third-party vendors. We ensure compliance with federal, state and university laws and guidelines.

    Must be authorized to work in the United States on an ongoing, full-time basis for any employer without sponsorship.

    Purpose

    Perform duties related to payroll deductions including garnishments, tax levies, parking and union dues. Oversee reporting of all personnel and payroll transactions to the State Comptroller’s Office using HRIS. Manage the student FICA exemption process. Oversee and balance monthly adjustments to employee records.

    This position is hybrid.

    Responsibilities

    • Responsible for processing all Garnishment Deductions for Court Orders, Child Support, Tax Levies and Administrative Wage Garnishments. Review all orders, provide written correspondence to employees and external agencies, set up deduction according to requirements, and track to ensure compliance. Reconcile entries during month-end closeout and process journal entries and vouchers to remit funds on behalf of the employees to external agencies.
    • Oversee deductions for Union Dues, Parking Permits with Parking and Transportation for UT Austin, Parking Permits for UT Austin employees at garages for UT System and UT Health Sciences Center San Antonio, Room and Board for McDonald Observatory, Charitable Contributions, and Prepaid Tuition. Review exceptions for all deductions on each payroll and correspond with employees to ensure accuracy. Reconcile entries during month-end closeout and process journal entries and vouchers to remit funds on behalf of the employees to the external departments and institutions.
    • Oversee Student Social Security and Medicare exemption process. Submit load of student academic records to determine exemption eligibility. Process refund vouchers, review reports, and correspond with student employees. Apply knowledge of tax laws to ensure compliance.
    • Process all payroll and personnel transactions for the university in the State Comptrollers Human Resource Information System (HRIS). Review reports, make adjustments and corrections as needed to ensure compliance with all higher education reporting requirements.
    • Oversee the collection of all back up documentation related to payroll adjustments and manual payments for audit support purposes
    • Other related functions as assigned.


    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree.
    • At least 5 years of experience in payroll.
    • Professional demeanor with experience employing diplomacy and confidentiality in all business matters.


    Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
    • Experience with Workday and DEFINE.
    • Experience working directly in Payroll or HRIS in higher education.


    Salary Range

    $70,000

    Working Conditions

    Employment Eligibility:

    Regular staff who have been employed in their current position for the last six continuous months are eligible for openings being recruited for through University-Wide or Open Recruiting, to include both promotional opportunities and lateral transfers.     Retirement Plan Eligibility:

    The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

  • Compliance:
