Position Title: Middle School Science Teacher Reports to: Middle School Division Head Employment Status: Full-Time, 10 Month FLSA Classification: Exempt POSITION DESCRIPTION Walker seeks an energetic and dedicated individual for a middle school science position beginning with the 2024-2025 school year. Because science represents an integral way of thinking about the world around us, our science curriculum trains students to explore life with a critical eye and an open mind. From an early age, emphasis is placed on observation, analysis, and communication skills. Courses are taught via a wide variety of developmentally appropriate methods, including labs, classroom discussion, modeling, and projects. Technology is integrated at each level to allow our students to gather and analyze data, as well as to connect with current events in the field. The teaching load is five sections, with no more than three preparations along with grade-level advising. Total student contact will be between 70 and 100. QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS •Mastery of a wide range of developmentally appropriate teaching strategies to engage and challenge all learners •Exceptional collaborative skills to maximize vertical science curriculum alignment and interdepartmental connections to involve Middle School students in authentic inquiry learning •Clear communication skills are needed to build and maintain positive, professional relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators •Demonstrate a growth mindset by seeking out opportunities for professional growth to remain current in curricular, technological, and pedagogical technique •Use technology in meaningful and appropriate ways in and out of the classroom •Utilize feedback regarding teaching and learning from the department chair and colleagues •Faculty and staff are expected to adhere to the Walker School Essential Expectations (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PfB2L-dkcB0c6gN9roQGJ8W4oJbB2g0F/view?usp=drive_link). ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES •Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise curriculum for said courses •Conduct administrative tasks relevant to these classes, including but not limited to working with students during tutorial, maintaining student grades, working with the Department Chair and Grade Level Dean, and communicating with students and parents in a timely, constructive manner •Serve as a student advisor •Participate in the professional life of the school by attending meetings and carrying out other duties as directed •Engage in the life of the school community outside of the classroom •Actively participate in the school's mission to create and maintain a caring and diverse community where meaningful relationships inspire transformative learning Preference will be given to candidates interested in contributing to the full life of the school through coaching at the Middle School or Upper School level or sponsoring a student organization CORE QUALIFICATIONS Classroom teaching experience is required, and a Master's degree or advanced course work is preferred.
