Role and Responsibilities

  • Safely operate heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, loaders, cranes, graders, or other machinery based on the specific needs of the project.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections before and after use to ensure proper functioning and safety.
  • Ensure that equipment is in good working condition by performing basic maintenance tasks such as cleaning, lubricating, and reporting malfunctions to maintenance teams.
  • Operate equipment to perform tasks including digging, lifting, grading, compacting, moving earth, and material handling according to project specifications.
  • Work with project managers and supervisors to understand job requirements and adjust equipment settings or operations accordingly.
  • Ensure that work is performed in compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, and industry best practices.
  • Maintain clear communication with site foremen, supervisors, and team members regarding equipment status and work progress.
  • Accurately complete daily equipment logs, documenting hours of operation, fuel use, and any issues encountered.
  • Follow project blueprints and job-site directions, ensuring all work is completed according to specifications.
  • Assist in the loading, unloading, and transportation of equipment to and from job sites.
  • Coordinate with ground crews to ensure safe and efficient movement of materials.
  • Work in all weather conditions and in various site environments, including construction sites, mines, and industrial facilities.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience as an equipment operator or in a similar heavy machinery role.
  • Ability to operate and maneuver a variety of heavy equipment (excavators, bulldozers, cranes, loaders, etc.).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude to identify and troubleshoot minor equipment issues.
  • Understanding of safety protocols and regulatory compliance (OSHA, local safety regulations).
  • Ability to read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and equipment manuals.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with supervisors, coworkers, and other team members.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects and perform physical labor as necessary for the job.
  • A valid driver’s license and clean driving record (CDL preferred for transporting equipment).

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Certification for operating specific machinery (e.g., forklift, crane, excavator).
  • OSHA certification or other relevant safety certifications.
  • Experience working in construction, mining, or industrial environments.
  • First-aid or CPR certification.

 

 

Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily performed on construction job sites, exposed to outdoor elements and varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces or elevated areas depending on the project.
  • Physical labor may be required, including the ability to lift and move equipment or materials.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times for safety.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours or on weekends as project schedules require.
  • The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

 

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses/spoggles, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.
