Job Description
Technical specialist role responsible for executing and supporting 3D scanning, data processing, and documentation activities within our LiDAR team. The 3D Scan Data Specialist works closely with project teams to ensure the accurate collection, processing, and organization of scan data from electric utility infrastructure projects. This role does not include project management or client-facing responsibilities but is critical to the quality and accuracy of our deliverables.
Typical duties include (but are not limited to):
- Operates 3D laser scanning equipment to collect LiDAR data in field environments, including substations and transmission lines.
- Performs in-field setups, coordinates scan positioning, and ensures proper scan registration and coverage.
- Processes and registers raw point cloud data using software such as Leica Cyclone, Trimble RealWorks or similar tools.
- Imports and organizes scan data into appropriate software platforms for analysis and modeling support.
- Uses QA/QC procedures to verify accuracy and completeness of scan data.
- Applies basic CAD skills to assist with data extraction or conversion into usable design references.
- Archives, backs up, and maintains file management standards for all scan data and documentation.
- Maintains equipment logs and reports any malfunctions or calibration needs.
- Supports continuous improvement by providing feedback on scanning workflows and technology.
- Follows safety protocols and field work procedures to ensure safe data collection activities.
Desired Education, Experience and Training
- Associate degree or technical certification in a related field such as Surveying, Engineering Technology, Drafting, or GIS, or equivalent experience preferred.
- 2 years of experience working with 3D scanning equipment and LiDAR data processing preferred.
- Proficiency with point cloud registration software (e.g., Leica Cyclone, Trimble, FARO Scene) preferred.
- Working knowledge of CAD platforms such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar preferred.
- Familiarity with electric utility infrastructure, especially substations and transmission lines, is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to data accuracy and quality.
- Ability to work independently in the field and follow standardized procedures.
- Excellent organizational and file management skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for field scanning assignments as needed.
- Commitment to safety and the ability to follow established safety procedures in field environments.
