Mental Health First Aid Instructor and Outreach Specialist

Qualifications: Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent. Family member or caregiver of child with mental health diagnosis, CFSS preferred. Personal experience with children’s mental health issues and in navigating child-serving systems. Non-profit organization experience and work history within child servicing systems preferred. Experience with Mental Health First Aid training preferred.

Skills & Knowledge Required:

• Knowledge of the service area and of resources for children with mental health issues.
• Knowledge and personal experience with children who have behavioral disorders.
• Knowledge and experience with the juvenile justice system, educational, and other child-servicing systems.
• Desire to help and support parents of children with SED, with strong customer service skills.
• Commitment to system of care principles and to working effectively as a part of a team.
• Excellent communication, organizational, problem-solving/creative thinking skills.
• Established support system and access to resources.
• Basic computer skills,
• Ability to travel, access to reliable transportation, and current auto insurance required.
• Ability to provide services in community settings.
• Access to reliable home interest service required.
• Ability to speak in front of groups.

Duties and Responsibilities/Principal Activities:

• Provide information and referrals, advocacy, and support to families with children with emotional and behavioral problems.
• Community education.
• Recruit for and provide ongoing Mental Health First Aid trainings in the community.
• Maintain confidential parent and professional contact documentation in a secure locked cabinet.
• Attend IEP team meetings and other team meetings to support parents and facilitate cooperation between professionals and parents with parents as equal partners.
• Liaison with professionals for purposes of referrals and obtaining needed services.
• Encourage and support the coordination of services for children with SED and their families, through role modeling and supporting system of care principles.
• Complete reports as needed in a timely manner.
• Attend meetings assigned, which may include local and regional mental health planning councils and local collaborative agency meetings.
• Ensure we conform to CARF standards applicable to the services provided.
• Other duties and/or tasks as assigned.
