POWERLINE RIGHT OF WAY TECHNICIAN



ABOUT THIS POSITION:
Expected Hiring Range: $24.88- $30.48/hr.
Work Location: 2540 Milano Avenue Apex, NC 27502
Schedule: Monday-Friday (alternating schedule)- 7:00am-5:30pm
Closing Date: Open until filled. First application review starting March 22, 2023

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING (DESCRIPTION):
In this position, you will perform specialized skilled work in tree pruning, removal, planting and right of way clearing in order to maintain adequate clearance for the safe operation of the Town's electric distribution system.

A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS (DUTIES & TASKS):


  • Drives and operates an aerial lift truck and uses it to prune and remove large trees often
    in close quarters near buildings, vehicles and around high voltage wires.
  • Prunes tress to remove live and dead limbs providing clearance on streets and sidewalks,
    at intersections, and around traffic signals and signs using chain saws, pole saws,
    pruners, ropes and hand pruners.
  • Disposes of the brush and limbs cleared from the site and ensures site is clean at the end
    of the work assignment.
  • Plants trees and shrubs and performs follow-up watering, mulch and treatment for insects
    and disease problems.
  • Cooperates with other Town departments/divisions to remove trees and limbs impacting
    on other Town operations.
  • Responds to after hours emergency tree maintenance needs.

ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED (MINIMUM MUST-HAVES):


Graduation from High School supplemented with coursework in urban forestry, horticulture,
arboricultural and experience with tree trimming around power lines; or an equivalent
combination of experience and education.

WITH THE ABILITY TO...(KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES):


  • Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and regulations and work zone safety rules
    applicable to the work and equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of the use and care of all tools, equipment, and supplies used right of way
    maintenance work.
  • Basic working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in power line
    work.
  • Ability to operate and maintain forestry/arboricultural/electric utility vehicles.
  • Ability to operate chain saws, hand saws, pole saws, pole pruners and hand pruners.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders and organize work flow of each job.
  • Ability to climb poles and trees safely and work efficiently.
  • Ability to work in close proximity to high voltage lines and to take precautionary measures to avoid accidents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors and the general public.


WHAT WOULD SET YOU APART (PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS):

In addition to the must-haves listed above, it would be great if you happen to have: A valid North Carolina class "A" commercial driver's license or class B w. Airbrake Endorsement.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion.
  • Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or in excess of 20 pounds constantly.
  • Must posses the visual acuity to operate a variety of motor vehicles and equipment such as bucket equipment, and chain saws, and to perform visual inspections.
