What are the responsibilities and job description for the CONSTRUCTION WORKER I-III position at Town of Chapel Hill?
The purpose of this position is to perform construction and maintenance work in support of the goals and mission of the Streets and Construction Programs in the Public Works Department. This position is safety sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing. The position is driving essential and must conform to the Town's Safe Driving and Accident Policy and procedures.
Essential Functions
- Performs streets maintenance, repair, and improvement activities.
- Operates and maintains equipment and hand tools.
- Assists in masonry work such as mixing mortar, supplying materials, digging, setting forms, pouring concrete, etc.
- Assists with inclement weather and special event response.
- Assists in traffic control measures to provide a safe work zone, including proper placement of signs and cones.
- Skilled construction methods and practices
- Asphalt patching, leaf collection and roadway construction maintenance
- Familiarity with street maintenance equipment
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Knowledge of:
Construction Worker I – No knowledge of general construction methods and practices required
Construction Worker II – Basic construction methods and practices of street construction and stormwater maintenance activities.
Construction Worker III - Skilled construction methods and practices of street construction and stormwater maintenance activities on equipment; and perform street and stormwater system construction and maintenance activities.
Ability to

Construction Worker III
- Perform skilled tasks; operate various equipment related to the program; perform preventive maintenance activities.
Education
Construction Worker I – No experience required.
Construction Worker II - At least one year of job-related experience.
Construction Worker III – At least three years of job-related experience.

Certification
All Levels - Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Construction Worker II/III - Successful completion or ability to readily obtain the work zone traffic control certification.
Construction Worker III–Possession of or ability to readily obtain a minimum of a Class B CDL issued by the State of North Carolina. Successful completion or ability to readily obtain the Competent Person Certification in Shoring and Trenching or Confined Space Rescue.
Salary : $31,959 - $54,039
