Program Coordinator – Adaptive Recreation  

 

PAY: $17.85 per hour

 

What We’re Looking For 

 

An energetic, enthusiastic, and creative individual, who has a passion for working with people who are on the autism spectrum, who have Down Syndrome, or other developmental disabilities. 


This position is open until filled and may close prior to the posted closing date.

What You’ll Do At Work 

 

Plan & Coordinate. Assist in a diverse offering of adaptive recreation program planning and facilitation. Review, create and distribute marketing materials. Utilize recreational software. Observe participant behaviors and interactions. Complete and submit reports


Communicate. Develop relationships with staff, parents, volunteers, and participants; be empathic, build trust, and display patience. Mediate and resolve conflicts and behaviors.  

 

Lead! Support staff and volunteers to create an inclusive and meaningful experience. Provide training and development of inclusion strategies. Provide positive and corrective feedback. 

 

Lead by ExampleManage participant behavior, lead games and activities, promote skill development, creativity, and exploration. Make adaptations to games and activities for inclusive play. . 


Participate! Actively engage while supervising participants. Encourage and invite participation, set an example for positive and inclusive play. Splash in the pool, build LEGOS, play board games, make slime, and more!

 

Attend to injuries. Provide first aid. Complete and submit reports. Inventory and restock supplies. Perform C.P.R. and utilize A.E.D.

 

Learn and Grow. Attend and participate in staff orientation and trainings. Lead and participate in staff meetings and teambuilding. Give and receive feedback. Provide input.

Support Adaptive Recreation. Set up, break down, and maintain supplies and equipment. Clean and maintain safe spaces. Distribute meals and snack. Drive town vehicles, including 15-passenger van of participants and staff. Administer medication. Be flexible and adapt to changes; assist and support where needed. 

 

Where You’ll Work 

 

You’ll be working both indoors and outdoors, at and in recreation centers, parks, playgrounds, trails, and swimming pools. You’ll travel in Town vehicles to offsite locations for field trips. Programs run year-round, and you may experience hot or cold temperatures and inclement weather.

 

When You’ll Work 

 

You’ll work year-round, up to 12 hours per weekMonday – Sunday, no more than 950 hours within a rolling calendar year. Evening and weekend work will be required based on seasonal program schedules.

  • Access to Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation facilities: Chapel Hill Community Center, Northside Gym, and the Homestead Aquatics Centers; includes Basketball, Volleyball, Rock Climbing, and Swimming during drop-in hours.  
  • Memories and friendships that will last a lifetime!  

You Should Apply if You (minimum requirements) 

 

  • Are 21 years of age or older.  
  • Have avalid North Carolina Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record. 
  • Enjoy working with individuals with different needs. 
  • Have at least 2 years’ experience working with individuals on the autism spectrum, with Down Syndrome, or with other developmental disabilities. 
  • Want to discover new things and work to overcome challenges.  
  • Enjoy playing games, being creative and want to work part time, year-round. 

 

Preference to those that apply who 

 

  • have experience, some college coursework, certifications, or a degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, or related field such as Adaptive Physical Education, Recreation Management, etc.
  • speak well enough to effectively communicate with campers and/or their parents in Burmese, Karen, Spanish and Mandarin.   

This classification has been designated as Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
