- Receives oral instructions or written work order from Supervisor.
- Plans and organizes work procedures using repair manuals, charts, and experience.
- Operates vehicle or equipment, discusses performance with operator, uses lift or jack to analyze, test, inspect, and determine cause of malfunction.
- Uses mechanics hand tools and power equipment to remove, disassemble, and repair, rebuild or replace defective parts or units.
- Performs engine and transmission overhauls, electrical system repairs and rewiring, brake system repairs, clutch repairs and replacements, and similar mechanical work.
- Diagnoses major engine and transmission problems, and prepares for outside repair work as necessary.
- Performs emission control inspection and upgrading work as necessary.
- Uses hand tools and power tools to repair damaged vehicle bodies and body parts, and auxiliary parts of equipment.
- Uses hand tools and power tools to repair damaged structural members of vehicles and performs minor welding as required.
- Grinds, files, and sands repaired surfaces using power and hand tools.
- Installs safety or emergency equipment on vehicles.
- Performs routine vehicle maintenance work including tune-ups, tire changing and balancing.
- Follows standard safety procedures and regulations.
- Completes work order and submits to Supervisor.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- Repairs and maintains power mowers, snow blowers, and other mechanical
equipment.
- Installs a variety of attachments to vehicles and equipment.
- Operates equipment and performs general maintenance work as required.
- Recommends and prepares vehicles and equipment for repair work by private dealers.
SUPERVISED BY:
Receives general supervision from Fleet Maintenance Services Foreman.
Job Opportunity: Skilled Mechanic
Qualifications:
- Completion of a vocational technical school program in automotive repair or an equivalent qualification.
- Four years of experience as a mechanic, including completion of a diesel engine repair program.
- Thorough knowledge of the operation, repair, and maintenance of motor vehicles, heavy construction equipment, and other mechanical equipment.
- In-depth understanding of hydraulic and electrical systems.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and servicing automotive, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.
- Ability to interpret drawings, diagrams, specifications, and equipment manuals.
- Capability to lift and/or carry objects weighing 25-50 pounds, with occasional requirements to lift heavier weights.
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow
