SOCIAL SERVICES

TRANSPORTATION DISPATCHER – DAY / BACK UP DRIVER

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Highly responsible dispatch work involving a variety of operational and administrative tasks related to the day-to-day running of the Transportation Division in the Social Services Department. Responsible for completing one run daily using the Magic Carpet Bus to pick up students at JFK Middle School to transport them to the Youth Center, and serves as back-up for established routes as needed.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Transportation Division Head.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Answer Dial-a-Ride/Fixed Bus (Magic Carpet) telephone and direct callers, take messages or answer procedural questions based on knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to departmental activities and bus route schedules. Schedule vehicles and drivers for daily appointments, special events, ADA. Respond to citizen and rider complaints. Drives DAR and Magic Carpet vehicles based on need.

Regular and punctual attendance. Good communication skills.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: Perform related work as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be required to stoop, reach with hands and arms, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, feel to operate objects, tools or controls; talk and hear. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers, various pieces of office equipment and busses. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to finger, grasp, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms.

The employee occasionally operates a motor vehicle and is exposed to driving in various climates and conditions and is exposed to certain particles and fumes.

Must be able to concentrate on detail with constant interruption, attend to task for 45-60 minutes at a time, remember multiple assignments given over long periods of time and understand the theories behind several related concepts. May be exposed to dust, fluctuation in inside temperatures and electro-magnetic radiation as in a computer screen. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

Driving is performed in a moderately and loud noisy traffic environment with regular interruptions via radio for pickup and return assignments; driving is done under possible adverse weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

Knowledge of Town streets and local facilities or ability to learn same quickly; ability to perform clerical tasks; ability to use two-way radio/cell phone and other communication devices; proficient with computers (including, but not limited to MS office, Excel); ability to work harmoniously with public.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, customers and the public. Must be honest, tactful and have a neat appearance. Must be proficient using a computer and applying all current software applications.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Graduation from high school and two (2) years’ experience performing the essential functions of this position. Possession of valid Commercial Driver’s License CDL with Class B with P and F endorsements; prior experience as a driver
