Job Overview
The Animal Control Officer plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of both animals and the community. This position involves responding to calls regarding stray, injured, or dangerous animals, enforcing animal-related laws and regulations, and providing education to the public about responsible pet ownership. The ideal candidate will possess a strong sense of leadership, compassion for animals, and a commitment to upholding the law. The position is available now for any applicant who can meet the requirements of M.R.S.A. Title 7 subsection 3947. The finalist must meet all the eligible requirements and must complete the basic training and be certified within 6 months of their appointment, if not already certified. The ACO works closely with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department. Compensation is a quarterly stipend plus mileage. Applicant must have their own vehicle. Duties
- Respond to calls regarding animal-related incidents, including stray, injured, or aggressive animals.
- Capture and transport animals to shelters or veterinary facilities as needed.
- Enforce local animal control laws and regulations, including issuing citations for violations.
- Conduct investigations into animal cruelty or neglect cases.
- Educate the public on responsible pet ownership and animal welfare issues.
- Maintain accurate records of animal control activities and prepare reports as required.
- Collaborate with law enforcement agencies when necessary to address animal-related concerns.
- Perform first aid on injured animals when required and ensure proper care is provided.
- Utilize surveillance techniques to monitor areas for potential animal control issues.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in animal care or handling is preferred.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage difficult situations calmly and effectively.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR is a plus.
- Experience in law enforcement or military service is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Ability to drive safely and efficiently under various conditions.
- Familiarity with surveillance methods for monitoring animal activities is desirable.
- Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with the public and other agencies.
