JOB SUMMARY
This is an Open Continuous Application for the position of Firefighter Recruit Trainee. Applications received will be considered for future classes based on department needs. The Firefighter Recruit Trainee is an entry-level fire suppression, prevention, and emergency response position for the Summerville Fire Department. Upon successful completion of the required recruit academy, personnel will progress into the position of a probationary firefighter.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Fire Recruit Trainees will complete the hiring process for the position of Fire Recruit Trainee. Must participate in oral interview. Must successfully complete JRAT (Job Related Physical Ability Test). Once applicant has been accepted, the Fire Recruit Trainee must successfully complete all certification levels of a fourteen-week firefighter recruit school. After graduation, the fire recruit trainee must then successfully complete a five-week NREMT (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians) -Basic program.
- The Fire Recruit school is focused on training, physical fitness, and preparing the candidate to meet specific standards of the Summerville Fire Department. The program includes classroom instruction and hands on training in firefighter techniques, search and rescue, vehicle extrication, emergency medical services, firefighter survival, and the use of various firefighting tools and equipment. The candidate will work and 8-hour shift (overtime, nights, and weekends may be required) and upon completion will move to a 48 on, 96 off standard firefighter shift schedule.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must be at least 18 years of age. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license. Must participate in oral interview. Must successfully complete JRAT (Job Related Physical Ability Test)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a fire engine, vehicles, firefighting equipment, medical equipment, computer, basic office equipment, telephone/radio, etc. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally and lift or carry weights of up to 200 pounds. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for periods of time, withstand uncomfortable and/or dangerous physical conditions at fire scenes, and perform manual tasks. Must be able to pass annual Department physical examinations.
