Fire Inspector/Firefighter EMT

Summary:

This entry level position is responsible for learning, understanding, and administering inspections to ensure fire code compliance and safe building conditions. This position is responsible for the proper application of fire codes and record maintenance of inspections and related activities. At the request of the Fire Captain’s, or Fire Chief, for investigative purposes can be called to emergencies involving fire, medical and environmental concerns. While not engaged in fire inspections duties, this position is responsible for protective service work in fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical care using highly technical, specialized firefighting apparatus and equipment. Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions, requiring a high degree of physical strength and endurance, and frequently involves considerable personal hazard. This position requires knowledge of Hydraulic Friction Loss Theory use of Extraction tools. The position has a 40 hr. a week schedule, working from 8 am to 5 pm. The applicant will work as a Fire Inspector during their normal shift. If an emergency should arrive that is need of the aerial to respond, the applicant will respond as the 2nd firefighter for the aerial, meeting the aerial on scene.

Essential Functions duties and responsibilities: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. • Performs station duties and apparatus checks per SOGs or as instructed to ensure that all equipment is ready to respond to emergencies.
• Drives, positions, operates fire apparatus in accordance with principles of hydraulics, deploys and connects hoses, assures proper pump pressure, operates nozzles, and directs water stream at fire emergencies.
• Performs search and rescue operations to prevent injury and loss of life, performs firefighting tasks to isolate and suppress involved areas to prevent loss of property.
• Performs ventilation in burning buildings, salvage operations, and preserves evidence to determine the cause of fire.

• Responds to medical calls and provides initial care for victims until relieved.
• Attends and participates in training and instruction drills.
• Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire department property.
• Conducts follow up inspections as assigned by the Fire Marshall.
• Inspects residential, licensed care, commercial, and industrial buildings, facilities, and multi-story buildings; to determine and enforce compliance with local and state fire and life safety codes; assesses code violation progress through site visits, certified mail and legal action as needed.
• Inspects new and existing structures and properties for construction, occupancy, fire protection and exposures as required by the fire code.
• Provides technical assistance to the department; interprets policies, procedures, and documents relating to types of chemicals and requirements of disclosure laws.
• Communicates in writing and orally with the public, contractors, vendors, architects, engineers, State Fire Marshall, law enforcement, etc.
• Determines if business emergency plan is required; reviews, evaluates, and processes business emergency plans.
• Researches and interprets the various local, state, and national fire and life safety codes for the public and makes recommendations.
• Writes reports based on field notes; issues Notices of Violation and citations for code violations; initiates prosecution and prepares materials necessary for litigation.
• Investigates fire and life safety complaints received from the public and takes appropriate action. Maintains files, inspection reports and related documents as required by Fire department policies.
• Determines operational readiness of fire suppression systems, fire detection systems, alarm systems and fire extinguishers; tracks field observations and test documentation.
• Develops, produces, coordinates, and maintains hazardous materials data on facilities within the jurisdiction.
• Assists in giving talks, demonstrations, and presentations before community groups, schools, and other organizations and institutions as needed.
• Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications / Education / Skills: to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

• Must be at least 18 years of age or older.

• Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Must have a South Carolina CDL or Class E Driver License.
• Five (5) years of experience in firefighting.
• Ability to pass background check and drug screening, as well as medical and physical examinations.
• Ability to comprehend and communicate both oral and written instructions.
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts.
• Ability to work effectively with the public, fellow employees, other agencies and departments.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment within the limits of the position and perform a variety of tasks simultaneously or in rapid succession.
• Must have computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point.
• Certificates / Licenses / Registrations
• Fire Fighter I and II – IFSAC or Pro Board
• Pump Operations – IFSAC or Pro Board
• Aerial Operations – IFSAC or Pro Board
• Emergency Vehicle Driver Training
• NIMS – ICS (100, 200, 700, 800)
• South Carolina Certified EMT or National Registered EMT
• ICC Fire Inspector 1 certification
• Knowledge of District rules and regulations, city and county ordinances, National Fire Protection Association Standards and Standard Fire Prevention code in addition to other federal, state, and local rules, regulations, and standards.
• Knowledge of South Carolina Occupational Health and Safety Administration (SC OSHA) regulations
• Preferred:
• SCFA 8610: Fire Marshal Rules and Regulations
• Fire Inspector 2 (required in 1 year from hiring)
• Fire plans examiner (required in 2 years from hiring)
