Northwest Park Assistant Camp Director
The Town of Windsor, CT seeks an Assistant Camp Director to work at Northwest Parks Camp Foxfire. Children ages 4-14 learn about nature and the environment at the parks 473 acre campus featuring native forests, fields, wetlands, and heritage farm animals. Through active, field based explorations and age-appropriate outdoor adventures, Camp Foxfire will nurture each child's curiosity and help them gain confidence and self-respect while building relationships with other children and the natural world.
This is a full-time temporary summer position with a start date of Monday, June 3, 2024 and ending Monday, August 12, 2024. Applicants who can commit to all work dates receive hiring preference. The hourly rate is $18.50/per hour. Work schedule is 40 hours a week, Monday Friday, 8:15 AM- 4:30 PM, with predetermined exceptions for assisting with extended day experiences. First Aid and CPR training is provided. Onsite housing may be available. Requires a drug screen and criminal background check before hiring.
Responsibilities:
- Support Camp Teachers in leading hands-on environmental education programs with an emphasis on science, nature, and agriculture for Pre-K 8th grade students; provide feedback and mentorship
- Possess a genuine passion for working with youths entirely outdoors, in all weather, while maintaining a positive energy and attitude. (Access to indoor/covered spaces for thunderstorms, etc)
- Assist with many of the administrative aspects of camp
- Help educators with program planning and substitute teach when needed
- Attend to needs of individual campers and respond to parent requests
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of program participants including social and emotional needs
- Maintain positive relationships with campers, parents/guardians and staff; create and maintain a positive, healthy team environment among staff
Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree or two years of experience in environmental education, interpretation, recreation or related field, or teaching experience with nature-based centers or camps
- Valid driver's license without record of suspension or revocation in any state and must be 21 years or older in order to provide transportation for camp participants
- Ability to assist the Camp Director in developing and delivering excellent pre-camp staff training
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences; excellent judgment and problem solving skills
- Willingness and ability to work outdoors in all weather (including summer heat & humidity and/or rain) and to be physically active for most of an 8 hour day. (This is a physically intensive job that includes significant movement throughout the day, including walking and hiking on uneven terrain, kneeling, bending, and lifting)
- Demonstrated commitment, reliability, punctuality, and responsibility with an emphasis on leadership, and behavioral management
