DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS                                          REPORTS TO:  Parks Superintendent

DIVISION: PARKS/TRAILS

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT                                               SALARY RANGE: $47,048-$63,091

 

SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Parks Superintendent, the Parks/Trails Maintenance Technician I performs a variety of duties including general and custodial maintenance in parks, trails, and buildings; and assists in snow removal activities as well as other related duties and responsibilities. 

 

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR TRAILS:

  • Vegetation pruning.
  • Weed whacking and weed mitigation.
  • Tread maintenance, trail resurfacing, maintain drainage and erosion control.
  • Chainsaw use to clear fallen or hazard trees.
  • Sign making and installation.
  • Trash and litter removal.
  • Painting and staining.
  • Cooperation and coordination with volunteer groups and other local trail entities.
  • Maintaining winter groomed trails.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR PARKS:

  • Park and playground maintenance and repair.
  • Lawn mowing.
  • Irrigation and turf maintenance.
  • Event set-up and break down over weekends.
  • Working weekend/special events.
  • Public restroom maintenance.
  • Performs garden bed maintenance and maintains soil in plant beds and gardens.
  • Assists the Parks Superintendent with planning garden beds, and coordinates and orders plants and materials for each summer gardening season.
  • Plants and maintains flowers, ornamental shrubs and trees through appropriate pruning, trimming, fertilizing, and pest control.
  • Operates mechanical and power equipment utilized in the planting and maintenance of ornamental plants and gardens.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR SNOW REMOVAL:

  • Use of pick-up truck with plow to clear snow from sidewalks, parks, and foot traffic areas.
  • Use of skid steer with assorted attachments for snow removal.
  • Hand shoveling, ice mitigation, and roof snow removal as needed.
  • Basic vehicle and machine operations and maintenance.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Work as a team member, providing support and assistance to other staff members.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with coworkers.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, oral and written.
  • Ability to lead seasonal coworkers on assorted tasks and projects.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Accepts supervisory guidance and counsel. Follows through with specific responsibilities, as
  • Recognizes and supports the efforts of coworkers.
  • Requires organizational skills for daily assigned task; Prepares safety equipment and materials/tools needed for that day’s work.


 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Basic trails maintenance, grounds maintenance, gardening methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Basic building maintenance methods and procedures, including electrical, carpentry, mechanical, painting, plumbing and custodial work.
  • Safe use and maintenance of trails, grounds, landscaping, and gardening materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Basic methods of record-keeping.

 

Ability to:

  • Learn, understand, and apply Department and Town policies, procedures and standards affecting department operations.
  • Understand and follow routine oral and written instructions.
  • Learn proper trails/grounds maintenance methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Learn the proper and safe use of controlled chemicals used in grounds maintenance work.
  • Operate and maintain grounds maintenance tools with skill and in a safe manner.
  • Learn to safely operate trails/grounds maintenance vehicles and trucks.
  • Maintain and repair assigned tools and equipment.
  • Communicate in oral and written form.
  • Prepare routine records.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely perform assigned duties.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

This position works under the general supervision of the Parks Superintendent.  Work is generally performed independently in accordance with established regulations and reviewed through inspections, reports, and an evaluation of results achieved.

 

This position has responsibility for managing and directing seasonal crews and leading work in Town gardens and events but does not have any direct personnel administration, supervisory or management responsibility.

 

GUIDELINES AND SCOPE

All federal, state, and local laws. Work requires discretion and judgment in interpreting Town policies, laws, and ordinances and analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of guidelines, policies, standards, and precedents.
