The strategic communications consultancy TrailRunner International is seeking high-energy, detail-oriented, service-minded Directors to support the firm’s clients around the world. You can work in any of the following office locations: Nashville, New York City, Dallas/Fort Worth, San Francisco, Shanghai, or Truckee, Calif.
As experienced advisors, Directors help clients in all industries leverage strategic communications to achieve their objectives in special situations (IPOs, M&A, restructurings, investor issues, regulatory matters, litigation, crises, etc.) and in longer-term engagements focused on priorities including corporate reputation, executive visibility, media relations, investor relations, and issues management. Directors play a critical role at TrailRunner: They directly advise clients, set the pace for client teams, and are responsible for ensuring high standards in every aspect of client work. This requires a commitment to working collaboratively as a player-coach who is committed to leading, teaching, and mentoring junior team members to help them drive results for clients and advance their careers.
In addition to proven strategic acumen, strong writing and editing skills, and strong analytical skills, success as a Director -- and in every role at TrailRunner -- requires an unwavering commitment to helping clients and teammates win. The ability to maintain poise and good humor in dynamic, high-intensity situations is highly valued, given the nature of the work and the firm’s inclusive, collaborative culture. Previous experience with public relations, corporate communications, or similar work is required.
Ideal candidates will have 10 or more years of relevant work experience and possess a combination of personal drive, emotional intelligence, and intellectual curiosity required for career advancement with the benefit of experience and mentoring from senior colleagues.
Key tasks and responsibilities
- In partnership with Managing Directors and independently, capable of fully owning every aspect of a client relationship and to be a valued point person and trusted advisor to clients
- Capable of simultaneously leading multiple accounts successfully; demonstrated judgment and strong instincts without needing direction
- Able to manage teams and coordinate across the firm, to take ideas from concept to execution, and to deliver results for clients
- Able to proactively and independently conceive of creative and proactive ways to serve clients beyond their requests
- Leadership and work product sets the bar for quality of work product and sets the standard for Associate and Analyst performance expectations
- Successfully builds relationships with journalists and utilizes network for the benefit of clients
- Able to independently complete individual projects and also work collaboratively with other members on client teams
- Able to manage media and interface with journalists with minimal guidance; written products require only minor editing

- Required 10 years of experience in public relations, corporate communications, journalism, the law, finance, or politics/public policy (relevant agency experience strongly preferred)
- B.S./B.A. in public relations, communications, finance, business, or other related field
