Field Paleontologist – Monitor Transcon is seeking candidates looking to gain field experience and further develop a career in paleontological resource management. The Field Paleontological Monitor will be responsible for carrying out, construction monitoring, field surveys, and reporting tasks related to paleontological resources in support of utility-scale energy development projects. Additional responsibilities may include fossil excavation and salvages, and involvement in paleontological coordination and planning tasks. Successful applicants will be highly motivated and comfortable working on active construction sites. This individual should prioritize attention to detail, have strong written and oral communication skills, and possess a bachelor’s degree or higher in paleontology, geology, or a combination of relevant experience and significant course work or equivalent training in the paleontology and sedimentary geology. SCHEDULE & EXPECTATIONS: Candidates applying for this position will be based on-site at project locations in eastern and central Oregon and western Idaho. Temporary relocation is required and reimbursement will be included in compensation. As a full time, hourly position, Field Paleontologist applicants can expect to work regular 60-hour work weeks (Monday – Saturday) while in the field during active construction; however, schedules may be adjusted to accommodate when/if crews work Sundays and/or holidays. When working on this project, hours and location are expected to match the needs of the project and employees are often expected to work 10-hour field inspection days (overtime is paid in accordance with state and federal laws). COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Compensation is hourly and based on qualifications and relevant experience and will range between $25-$32 per hour. Candidates applying for this position should anticipate a commitment of up to 50-60 hours a week with overtime paid over 40 hours, per diem reimbursement, and provision of a company vehicle. Transcon will provide any necessary equipment to complete job functions including PPE, tablet/laptop, radio, and GPS submeter. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Education and professional experience in paleontology - possession of B.S. or B.A. degree with an emphasis in paleontology or geology or demonstrated equivalent experience is required. Minimum of one (1) year of monitoring or survey experience Monitors must demonstrate proficiency in recognizing various types of fossils, familiarity with collection methods, and basic knowledge of paleontological field techniques. Knowledge of basic field geology and paleontology skills, such as: Geologic descriptions Measuring stratigraphic columns Recognizing vertebrate, invertebrate, plant, and trace fossils in the field Must have the knowledge of using excavation tools Ability to work long hours in potentially extreme weather conditions Ability to travel for extended periods of time or relocate Competence using global positioning system units, maps, tablets, and submeter accuracy devices Competence taking detailed field notes and photographs The ability to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle over rough terrain The ability to perform work duties independently or as part of a team Capable of walking/hiking long distances Clear communicator, highly organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, and dependable PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Prior experience with paleontological mitigation projects including construction monitoring is highly desirable. Fossil preparation and/or museum curation experience. Familiarity with typical utility construction activities Familiarity with ESRI GIS applications (including desktop, ArcGIS, Field Maps, Survey123, etc.) Prior experience working in Oregon and Idaho ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: The physical activities of this position constantly require effective talking, hearing, sitting, walking, and standing functions. The position also often involves sedentary work where sitting is required most of the time, with occasional standing or walking. The position also requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Must be able to perform activities with close visual acuity, such as reading a computer screen and reading print material. The functions of this position are conducted in a temperature-controlled environment. INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The occupant of this position must be able to perform the responsibilities of the position well under pressure. The position requires adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure. This position requires the ability to deal with and find a resolution to problems and maintain a productive working relationship with employees which may be interrupted frequently to meet the needs and requests of others. It also requires adaptability to fluctuate between priorities daily while being responsive to needs as they arise.
