Medical Assistant

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Greet patients and prepare them for medical provider examination to include obtaining medical history and vital signs
• Instruct patient in the collection of samples and administer testing: urine drug screen, pregnancy, etc
• Monitor patients for any reactions to administered medications
• Sanitize, restock and organize exam rooms, supply rooms and clinical care areas
• Prepare medication orders and refills in the e-prescribing system per the request of the medical provider
• Answer phone calls in a professional manner and schedule appointments
• Work with Medicaid and other insurance companies to obtain prior authorizations for medications and visits and obtain copay information
• Maintain medical supply inventory to include: placing orders and verifying receipt
• Maintain a safe, secure and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards, procedures and complying with legal regulations
• Remain current on job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities
• Assist medical providers in administrative and/or other clinical tasks as needed

Minimum Requirements 

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Completion of MA program or equivalent, one year related experience preferred
• CPR certified or willing to become certified through an accredited program
• Possess a basic understanding of clinical pharmacology and medical terminology
• Previous experience with scheduling patients, answering phones, ordering and managing supplies
• Experience working with patients who are suffering from anxiety, depression, addiction and other mental disorders
• Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) preferred 
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.

SKILLS and ABILITIES 

• Should have a thorough understanding of the cultures and the needs of this population and also the ability to remain professional with both patients and staff
• Knowledge of alcohol use disorder and drug addiction as a disease that requires medical support
• Ability to interact with patients, families and others in an empathetic, respectful and friendly manner
• Ability to communicate proficiently both verbally and in writing. 
• Demonstrate the ability to respond to situations, crises and emergencies with good judgment 
• Working knowledge of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and 42 CFR
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively manage multiple responsibilities and tasks to completion
