Youth Care Specialist's contribute to TruLight Youth Village’s mission, vision, and values and are passionate about working with children that have experienced trauma. This means that you are excited about supporting the physical and emotional needs of children. Facilitating a healthy group living experience is important for both the children and Youth Care Specialists. Youth Care Specialist are responsible for the care of youth ages 0-18 years.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
· Oversee youth
· Model positive behaviors and coping skills
· Maintain the safety and security of the youth in care
· Responsible for proper administration of medications and CPR-First Aid per TruLight Youth Village guidelines and policies.
· Respect the dignity and worth of children and maintain professional boundaries.
· Maintain client confidentiality per Youth Village standards and all applicable codes of ethics.
· Consider the environmental, cultural, safety, diversity issues and needs for the youth.
· Identify and understand the strengths, abilities, and competencies of the youth.
Job Duties
· Report immediately any suspected incidents of child abuse or neglect to the Program Director and the Child Abuse Hotline.
· Report serious incidents to the Supervisor.
· Complete other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or CEO.
· Have clients ready of school on time.
· Oversee and facilitate all recreational and leisure activities for youth such as games, play, projects.
· Observe any changes in behavior such as side effects of medication or unusual or changes in behavior.
· Prepare and supervise meals and snacks, providing training to youths as per schedule.
· Help youth during meal preparation, housekeeping responsibilities, personal hygiene, grooming and other activities as needed.
· Oversees youth in and around the property.
· Help youth with school homework, ensure homework is completed on time
Duties-Implementation
· For younger children diaper changing and potty training are required.
· Functions within Agency policy and procedures (i.e. Employee Handbook).
· Ensure house is clean and orderly and in good repair, and through proper means beautifies the cottage grounds.
· Evening and night supervision include house/room checks, laundry and other duties as explained by the Program Director.
· Complete assignments on time.
· Attend required, scheduled in-service training to develop professional skills.
· Meet with immediate supervisor on a semi-annual basis to review performance, accomplishments, challenges, and job descriptions.
· To be a flexible member of the agency’s team to carry out the overall agency goals.
· Ability to support the Youth Village’s culture, growth, and success through communication, accountability, and positivity.
· Ability to be clear headed and decisive based on the scope of the position.
· Ability to work efficiently and effectively both individually and as part of a team.
· Strong customer service focus, excellent time management, oral and written communication skills.
Supervision
· Communicate regularly with immediate supervisor and seek supervision when necessary.
· Be prepared to address issues and challenges, including sharing your solutions during supervisory conferences and meetings.
· Accept and implement direction, instructions, and corrections from immediate supervisor.
Work Environment
Treatment milieu environment. A youth care specialist spends their time working with youth, helping with daily tasks. Shifts vary, depending on the needs of the agency –The job of a Youth Care Specialist can be physically and emotionally challenging.
Physical Demands
· The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. The Youth Care Specialist must be able to pass EBI (Emergency Behavior Intervention) training and use techniques as taught.
· Must be able to sit or stand at a personal computer for a reasonable length of time typing and reading.
· Must be able to see, hear, speak, walk, and sit. Must be able to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
· Vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to focus.
· Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Youth Care Specialists must support flexible work hours to maintain the required ratio, including weekends, holidays, evening hours and the over-night shift.
Travel
· Occasional travel may be required to transport youth in care. Agency vehicle will be provided.
Required Education, Experience, and other Job Requirements
· HS diploma or GED (General Educational Development)
· Must be at least 21 years of age per licensing standards
· Valid Texas driver license required to start job. If you have an out of state driver license per licensing standards you much obtain a Texas driver license within 90 days.
· Clean driving record, must have the ability to meet TruLight Youth Village requirements for coverage under TruLight auto insurance policy
· Proof of valid/current personal auto liability insurance
· Must provide three (3) professional business references
· Must clear criminal required background checks
· Cleared TB results
· Cleared Drug Screen
· Must be familiar with Word, Excel, and email applications
· Preferred-A minimum of two (2) years of prior experience in the direct care field in a residential setting serving children ages 0-18 years.
· Access to reliable transportation
