Medication Prior Authorizations Serve as a subject matter expert for medication prior authorizations Educate / in-services MDs, RNs and NPs on reimbursement changes. Obtain treatment plans and patient demographics to begin insurance verification and authorization process. Work with the Medical Center’s clinical staff to obtain information necessary to ensure proper documentation and justification for payment. Work with the Medical Records Department to ensure proper documentation and coding Oversee processes for analyzing benefit requirements and obtaining authorizations as well as medical necessity clearance under the supervision of a pharmacist. Patient Interaction 1. In conjunction with a supervising pharmacist, monitor adherence with the goal of improving patient outcomes 2. Proactively contact patients to notify them of upcoming prescription refills Inform patients of status of prior authorizations or appeals process 3. Refer patients’ concerns requiring clinical interpretation to the appropriate provider (MD, RPh, RN, NP, PA) 4. Resolve patients’ payer-related concerns to optimize care Other Duties and Functions: Inventory Management 1. Receive drugs from wholesale distributors and restock pharmacy drug storage locations. 2. Participate in conducting routine physical inventories of all drug storage locations. 3. Identify and segregate expired drugs. 4. Help to maintain financial and regulatory records required by the Medical 5. Center, and by state and federal agencies. 6. Participate in managing Schedule II, III and IV controlled substance inventories. Medication Distribution and Control 1. Restock medications into automated drug dispensing machines. 2. Deliver bulk and patient-specific drug products to patient care areas. 3. Support filling outpatient prescriptions as allowed by law. Drug Preparation 1. Maintain knowledge of the general chemical and physical properties of drugs handled in the pharmacy. 2. Repackage and label pharmaceuticals. 3. Prepare sterile products using proper aseptic technique. 4. Perform calculations required for dosage determinations and drug preparation using the metric system. Department of Pharmacy Quality Programs 1. Conduct routine inspections of all drug storage locations and document storage temperature as required. 2. Participate in gathering and reporting data to support the Department of 3. Pharmacy Quality Programs. Training and Supervision 1. Participate in recruiting and hiring pharmacy technicians and interns. 2. Participate in developing technician staffing plans and in preparing the technician and intern schedule. 3. Participate in evaluating the performance of technicians and interns. 4. Participate in training and educating new department employees. 5. Serve as the triage technician in the central pharmacy. Functions include managing telephone calls, coordinating the work of other technicians and providing operational support to pharmacists. 6. Provide oversight for other technicians and as allowed by law, check the work of other registered and certified technicians. Service Excellence 1. Maintain confidentiality of patient information. 4Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. A Medication Access Coordinator must have successfully passed the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam and is required to obtain 20 hours of accredited continuing education to recertify every two years. CPhTs must also be registered with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy. The ideal candidate must have at least three years of related experience. Registered as a pharmacy technician with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
